I was at the local ARB
shop today and there was a new Toyota Wagon in the car park.
After some time the owner turned up and i just had to have a look and he was only to happy to show me the new vehicle.
The VIN ended in 1039 so it was not the first to have the compliance fitted.
Shorter than the Troopie with a rear side window that was hinged so the opening is only small.
Under the bonnet the first thing that you see is the inter cooler sitting on to of the motor. It is very big. I have always thought that a inter cooler over the motor has to be better than one in front of the radiator.
The other thing that I noticed is that model does not have a hand throttle. A BIG step back wards. It does have a idle up switch like the 100 Series but they are as useful as a ashtray on a bike.
Apart from that the dash is the same as the 78 Series except that the new model does not have a cassette player. The 78 Series is looking better all the time.

Looks like a great vehicle, and would tempt me back to toyota's product, given the new patrol is likely to be a school mums wagon in the vein of the 100 series.

Also had leaf rear springs and coil front springs on a solid axle. Spare tyre was on the rear door. It also had only one fuel tank.

Sarg,
Having the inter cooler in front of the radiator is only another restriction to air flow which also requires more room behind the grill.
Inter cooler
Air con Condenser
Radiator
Plus the bugs and grass seeds that are always there.
That is a lot for the air flow to do.
The length of the pipes that go from the inter cooler to the inlet manifold are very long and would only absorb heat from the engine bay.
Having the inter cooler over the motor with a air scoop similar to the other popular make of 4WD on the market today means that the air is passed over the inter cooler and the air passing through is cooled and straight into the motor.
Some might that the hot air rising will heat the inter cooler but with the air coming in through the air scoop, the heat would be pushed down away from the inter cooler. If the vehicle is going slow, chances are the turbo is not on boost and there fore the air does not have to be cooled as much.
Not very scientific but it is just my theory.

Hi Wayne. The LC100 didn't have a hand throttle either - I wrote to Toyota and said that was a step backwards - it also didn't have a front grab bar - needless to say Toyota didn't write back. As soon as our new Ute turns up and we've been for a drive, we'll let you know how good the fuel consumption is!!!!!

Hi Ruth,
I reckon you'll need the grab bar!! At least they kept the old interior.
The grab bars are disappearing because you can't have them with airbags.
Can't be long now
Cheers
Phil
