Having read so much about failures of the connecting shaft between the gearbox and transfer box in models between 2000 and late 2003 I decided to have mine changed to the much heavier connector shaft supplied by Toyota.I changed mine at 147000kms. and when removed was still in quite good condition, but as the machanic said you would never know when it could have stripped leaving you with no drive. He does a lot of the hired vehicles which seem to change the shaft regardless at 150000kms.It cost a few dollars but is cheap insurance as against thousands of dollars to get a vehicle towed in a remote situation. When you seethe difference in thickness from the replacemant to the original it sure justifies doing the job if you are keeping the vehicle.Icannot give a price as it was done through a friend.Ijust have more piece of mind now.

Yeh, a mate did his Troopie recently. It was just about to go, as it turned out.
Enquired first at a Toyota dealership, but they feigned ignorance - never heard of the problem. Said they would get the service manager to ring, which he never did. Took it to a non-Toyota shop, where the guy was quite conversant with the problem and did the repair at a good price. Think his had done about 120k. Now peace of mind.

Mate, had the same awful expirience at 110,000 K's and lost fifth gear as well....it cost me a new gearbox plus the shaft....it's been all good since and I still love it to bits....regards Phil
