Been thinking the same thing about my 2.8 Pajero.
About 5 years ago, I put a 2.5" on my pajero from the expansion connection back, with a free flow turbo muffler, instead of the standard 2 1/4".
Not a lot of difference in performance, but a little more noise.

Really, it should be from the turbo back.

I just talked to Beaudesert Exhausts, and they have suggested a 2 7/8" system from the turbo back, but about $1100.00. They havn't done one before, so it would be a special for them.

Have had other prices of about $700.00, but they would need the car for 2 to 3 days to make the plate which bolts onto the turbo.

I would expect better pick up on the low rev side of things with the turbo spooling up more quickly. My 2.8l turbo starts spooling at 1500rpm and is on full song by 1800 rpm, so maybe faster pickup in that area?

I would guess that the wastegate is going to limit any real power gains higher up.

Might be better economy by the engine not having to pump the turbo as hard?

Hi guys
I had mine done by Rob Bliss Exhausts at geebung cost about $650 to $700.
Had dump pipe and hole exhaust done and it made a massive difference, turbo lag hardly noticable and spools up at a lot lower rpm. Money well spent for me just wish I had done it sooner.

Hi, Qldplodder
If you are in Brisbane. I have my '99 2.8 Nissan Patrol turbo done at Men at Work at Capalaba for $450. They put a 2.75" system with a turbo muffler and flexable joint to the turbo. Unfortunately they can't do mandrel bends but I doubt that that would make a great difference.
I really noticed an improvement in the torque and extra power. They did it in a couple of hours.

Apologies to AS/KS,

seemed to have pinched your post.

Thanks Kevin & Ross, sounds good. I will follow up.
Yes, I am in Brisbane.

It seems that replacing the flange at the turbo does make a difference in a freer flowing exhaust.

You need to decide whether you want a cheap but reasonably effective system or pay a bit more and get some real results.

If you want good results, from what I have heard you really need a mandrel bend system with a larger dump pipe like the ones provided by Beaudesert Exhausts. I have contacted a few diesel, turbo, 4WD performance businesses and that seems to be the trend. The other add on is a manual boost control valve.

If you want to spend REALLY BIG BUCKS then I'd suggest you give Taipan XP a call. I spoke to the guy at a 4WD show last year, the cost of their systems spun me out, $1200 - $1400 just for the exhaust and you loose the car for 2-3 days as they weld each section together where there is a bend rather than bend the pipe!

Hi AS/KS.
I had the exhaust changed from rear of turbo & fitted a 2.5" system. The pajero was a dream to drive as there was no drone from the exhaust.
Also fitted snorkel, manual turbo boost & finer filter.
Regards.

Hi AS/KS.
I originally had a stainless sports system installed by South Tweed Autos.
A few years after that, I had a new pipe made up fron the rear of the turbo to the existing sports system. This was done at Tweed City Exhaust & Towbars.
I have sold the 2.8 pajero & have fitted a sports muffler to my NP 3.2l pajero.I kept the same size exhaust & rear resonator(to cut out the drone!!).
Regards.

Here is what I had done to my Navara 3.0TD

We used a 2-1/2 " exhaust,, and cut the tailpipe, about 6" towards the back from the bend where it flattens out,,, ( you see you will need a little back pressure to get the turbo to work properly ) ,,,

Then I ran the pipe into a straight thru Hotdog muffler, just before the rear diff, then between the spring and the spare tyre run it into a dump pipe..
Performance difference is about 8 - 10 % depending on vehicle's state of tune ..

Price $220 ,, no more , bo bull
Then I had it put on a dyno

" Bloody Beautiful "

Cheers Mate
