Just worked this weeks fuel consumption on the V6 3.4L prado and came in at 300klms and used 45L of fuel =15L per 100. Pretty well what they estimate. Not bab for stop start round town, running air con now and then. Will have easters usage with towing camper mainly freeway/highway driving on tuesday. Regards Steve M

Yeah there bloody brillant on fuel the 1KZ, I just couldnt justify the extra 10/15k over the petrol. Roughly worked out what I would possibly use over the next 5 years (dont normally keep them that long although wife reckons this is it for a while mmm) and will probably spend an extra 5k in fuel and lose a couple of $$ in value over the diesel but will still be in front maybe ??? I would have bought the diesel but finances didnt allow it and I'm a tight arse and hate borrowing money LOL. They reckon the new D4D is running about 14/15 round town, bit thirsty I think for a diesel. Regards Steve M

10.45L / 100km in town, for Auto D4D Prado. This is in the 1st 2,000km, a/c on 80% of the time.

Fuel Gauge indicates that my next 2,000 km will be < 10L / 100km.

I'm peed off with my Prado TD - only averaging 11.8 l/100, mixture of freeway, highway and cruisy suburban (no stop-start) and the VERY occasional offroad venture...used to get 15% better then it all went downhill for no reason, haven't found out why yet...

Less than 10lt/100kms ?????
I've never heard of any Prado getting that sort of economy. They all seem to get around 11-13 lt/100 kms. (Turbo Diesel that is) Was this downhill with no roofrack on slicks?

Brew69 - I used to achieve approx 12.5 l/100km around town, 10 l/100km on the freeway @ 110km/h and occasionally 9-9.5 l/100km if I was content to sit on 95-100km/h. No roofrack, Grandtrek tyres @ 36psi, usually 2 adults, 2 kids, luggage, aircon, fridge.. These days 10 l/100km is a distant memory let alone anything more frugal..I have to sit on 95 km/h to achieve 11 l/100km..

In real terms, I used to get 1300km on a trip with gauges showing slightly above empty, these days its more like 1150km with both gauges showing as empty as I dare go...around town I have to fill up at 950-1000k, previously 1100k was a breeze

I'm currently running Cooper AT/r which I know will increase rolling resistance, but the fuel consumption increased before I had them fitted... I service my airfilter every 5000k or less (replace it every 40000k) change fuel filter every 20000k, oil every 5000k, oil filter every 10000k, I drive it like a granny (maybe thats my problem??) .. I'm giving up hope on finding a cure, just peeved as I bought the TD Prado for its fuel economy and range for desert trips, now I still need to carry extra fuel.

Apart from that, I think the Prado is an absolutely BRILLIANT vehicle and I hope I never part with it!

Ideas welcome....

Cheers and beers

Hi RichieK
Don't feel so bad. My 05 TD auto with stock tyres no rack and I am lucky to get under 15 l per 100 around town and thats driving like a granny.
I am going on a big Simpson trip in 3 weeks and I have a new D Tronic so will be interesting to see what I get now.
I will let you know but I have given up on decent economy now as well.
Mine has been like this since new.

dont feel bad those not able to achieve the amazing results posted on the net for economy. Not saying they arnt true but lets just say I met up with my Sister and BIL along with a friend who had come over from SA. Both were driving v6 Prados - one a 3.4 and the other a 4.0l and both used over 20l per hundred for the trip

I flew to Perth last month for a 2 week our of Esperance, Albany and Southwest corner. Hired a Mitsubishi Outlander done less than 300 klms when I picked it up over 2000k when I took it back averaged better than 10l per 100k including offroad and beach work, touring on sealed roads got as good as 8.5l per 100. Petrol 2.4lt auto I was quite surprised at the economy and power. Cheers Rob

My fuel consumption varies a lot according to the mood I am in. When I am uptight the consumption is up and when I am feeling comfortable and relaxed the consumption is down. Maybe the weight of my right foot changes with the mood?

Prado Feb 2007 build. 3L turbo D4D. I keep very accurate records and after 7 fills averaging I'm avergaing 9.1L/100Km or 11.04Km/L.
This is based on about 75% freeway and 25% city work.
Carry about 100kg of work gear with me.
I'm happy with that as its identical consumption to my previous work car which was a 2005 Mitsubishi Magna S/wagon.

Cheers

That's awesome, can't wait to take my Auto D4D Prado out on the country road.

10.45L / 100km for me, 100% city with a/c on 80% of the time. Running stock Grand C raps @ 38psi with Sovereign bull bar & Rhino Cross Bars. I also haven't been scared in planting the foot whenever I feel the urge (very often).

Fuel consumption from the 2,000km + mark looks to be under 10L / 100km.

Hoping to get low 9's in the country.

For me, this is a god send compared to my Kia Sorrento I sold. Petrol, 5sp Auto and no matter how carefully I drove it, I couldn't get it under 13.5L / 100km, city or country. Typically Journo's were getting 16-18L, that should indicate how light-footed I was driving it.

Hi ya Go Fishing
Yep, I think the economy is good too.
I do not drive hard and stick to the speed limits. If you drive normally you will have no probs getting low 9's.
I also like to give it a boot occasionally, esp up those long hills.
Cheers

Hi Go Fishing
Note you run 38PSI on the Grand Treks. Checked mine when delivered and they had 60PSI in them. Service Dept says sorry, they are shipped that way and pre-delivery never adjusted.
Since then I have been confused. Manual and sticker on door reads around 28PSI. The Toyota service dept says run @ 34PSi as that gives a bit better wear".
I'm curious for your info on running 38PSI if you don't mind.
All info helps build a better picture.

Hi PeteS

Mine got delivered with 41-42PSI in each.

I'm no expert on tyres and pressures. I guess I just like them a little firmer and it gives less body roll around corners, not that I'm a speed demon.

I think the higher the PSI, the better the fuel economy at the expense of the tyre wearing more in the middle of it, rather than the edges. At this PSI, tyres will last less.

It's my mindset I guess. I've got a Mazda 3 SP23 and I like that with a nice firm cornering ability.

I've got the Prado till our baby comes home, baby girl born 16 weeks premature but doing strong. When she comes home, the Prado will be the missus shopping trolley and my toy when I go away fishing. It's going to be hard to part with it, especially after I've kitted it out with custom sheepies front and back as well as an Eclipse AVN6000 for $4K. All in one Sat Nav, GPS, DVD Player, Reversing Camera and I-pod Controller. Will miss the diesel, it's my first and I'll never go back to petrol in a large car.
