yep your right there as tight as a a nuns nasty.
you need the right size socket with a 6ft bar on the end of the breaker bar.
thats the only way.
also stick a screwdriver into the slots on the disk and let it rest against the caliper to stop it from turning even with the full weight of the car on the wheel it will still want to spin.
cheers

Jack car off floor and support it on a stand. Under bottom ball joint is a 14 mm bolt through the strut . remove it and pull ball joint out of strut. On the inner cv joint on the g/box side is a clevis pin. Knock it out. you can then pull cv off g/box shaft. Remove inner cv from shaft and then the boot and then the outer boot. replace outer boot etc etc till you are back where you started.

Getting the picture, When that pin is removed can you knock the actual cv joint back off the drive shaft?

if u are just changing the boot, you really do not need to take the nut off..... but if you want to take the shaft out. they do get incredibly tight. you will have to put the handbrake on and get someone to press on the brake pedal real hard. also use an extension on the shifter.

Sam, the nut is 36mm - most backyarders need a shifter :-))) and I'm one of them :-))

Gday Axle,
The nut is 36mm - unlikely you'll have a socket for it. I've done it before by keeping the vehicle on the ground, handbrake on very tight, remove the split pin and use a very large shifter (this proves I am not a mechanic :-))) - tapping it with a rubber mallet.

But like the others have said, you don't really need to remove the driveshaft. But the job is very fiddly to do it on the vehicle. If its an outer boot, you'll need to drive the pin out of the inner joint, unhitch the lower ball joint (removing the 14mm head bolt), undo the boot clips and slide back the inner boot, undo the circlip for the inner joint, slide off the inner joint, then undo the outer joint clips, clean out the grease, install new grease, new boot and reassemble. Takes a couple of hours.

And before you start its worth jacking up the front and be sure the wheel bearings are OK. These wheel bearings are cheap - just buy the kit from CBC (about $35 from memory) if you are in any doubt as to their servicability.

Cheers
Phil
