I am looking to buy a GPS for an upcoming trip in June. I am extremely confused by all the advertising out there. Any recommendations for a basic, good, reliable unit for under $400.

It really depends what you indend to use the GPS for - if its purely for road navigation then JB HIFI have the TomTom for 416 after cashback at the moment.
If you want to use it to guide you on treks off road or for marine use then these are useless - you will need a proper GPS unit such as one from Magellan or Garmin. The best way to choose is to go into a store and look at how they operate - some have larger text, better contrast ect.
There will be many supporters of particular brands but most have similar features.
Johnny appleseed has a good site to get started -

if there are any features that you cant quite understand, post back here and you will get answers in a snap.
I have a magellan MAP330 and find it to be great but it is a bit of a dinosaur these days - for road nav I have just purchased the TomTom I mentioned earlier - mainly because it fits the pocket when you get where you are going and you dont need to leave it in the car.
When my dad bought a GPS, he went for the Garmin MAP76 marine as it is usable for land or water use - Dont forget though, the software and mapping can add hundreds of dollars to the cost.
hope this helps your decisions,
Wayne

Garmin GPS 60 - around $350 - has suited me very well as a basic unit - clear display an easy to use - there was a post on this very topic about a week back.

Hi, I have a Garmin Map60Cx. It replaced my map60C which I lost.
Its great unit and can be used for auto-routing as well. I use mine in the car with a RAM mount and the big suction cup stuck to the window. It never fell off over 24,000 km's around Oz. The Cx has an SD card for holding more map info as well.

Great unit but a bit pricey. What others have said is true. You need to work out what you need it for and that makes your decision a whole lot easier!

Cheers Strahan.
