Swag question

Can anyone give me feedback, good or bad, on the Oztrail (brand) Mitchell (model) swags (specifically the double)?

This question is in the archives but there was some confusion over the swag in the replies, 2 companies offer a very similarly named swag.

Please note I am NOT referring to the Mr Swagman brand swag called the "OZtrail Mitchell" so he gets the first hit on Google, you would think a good lawyer would be right onto that lol.

hey Brew69.

Go to an upholsterer and get them to make you one, this way you get exactly what you want and probably cheaper as well.

Cheers Steve.

Unless your a young fella, I would'nt consider a swag. The bloody things are cold and if it rains, even more miserable. I grew up sleeping in these things and never want to see another one again.

Consider taking the back seat out of your car and setting up a sleeping arrangement inside.

Many will disagree with me, but a good nights sleep is the most important thing in the bush.

Kim

Can't disagree with you old fella. But, I love my swag, and I don't know why. It's as heavy and bulky as a family size tent, with an annexe. Maybe it's the Banjo Patterson thing ..but, I bet he ever slept in a swag, he was after all son of a rich cockie. My swag doesn't even have a mossie net, so I get to share it with spiders and lizards. To date i haven't woken up with a joe blake at my feet - touch wood. Then again, when I started camping, if you said you wanted a tent with a sewn-in floor they'd have lynched you for being ...er ..strange. Today's swags aint swags, they're luxury one man tents.

What's this old fella stuff? I have'nt reached my sixth decade yet (but very close).

You really know how to hurt a guy!

New swags are probably more comfortable, but they look like mini tents to me.

The original swags were a bitch. Ask any Stockman who froze his balls off in winter.

LOL

Sounds like we were tapping feet to the same hit parade Kim.
Original swags!? Mine was 2 old blankets that I begged from mum, with a canvas ground sheet that went under, or all around, depending on the weather. Cold? Bloody freezing. We'd build up the fire and try to get some zzzz's in before the blaze died down. Woke up with half a swag one morning, must've got cold feet during the night and pushed 'em a bit too close to the fire. The smell of smouldering blanket woke me up.
I've taught my kids love camping now ..parent's revenge!!

djm67,
mate i havent heard of the swag you are referring to, proberbly because i have just bought my first one, but would like to offer some feedback if your interested.
The missus and i bought a Burke & Wills double swag a couple of months ago and love it. I can be used in three configerations, full canvas, half or all mozzy screen. If has 3 dome poles and plenty of room for the two of us, and i am 6'3". It has a 75mm thick mattress, and kept us bone dry in tropical downpours. rrp$ 550 approx.
hope this helps.
cheers Wayne-o

Bought an OzTrail tent once, after 11 1/2 months it started to fall apart. they replaced it on warranty, but the new one leaked. They gave me my money back. So, I guess if you like the look of it try it out, on my experiece the warranty is good. (Just not too sure about the product)

I have a Double Bourke and Wills and it leaked badly after it had been soaked from New numurous times...

They main reason i would buy from these guys again is that they double stitched the canvas to the pvc base, put extra canvas in areas where water may/could get in and put extra velcro here and their all without any problems... Basically they stand by their products if your unhappy...Without any questions at all.

I've owned an Oz Trail Mitchell (cost about $200, single, from Granger Camping) for almost two years and have used it in conditions from -5C to +45C and for a three week stint in the High Country when it rained almost every night :) The swag is excellent for robustness, weather proofness and value for money. I recommend it without hesitation.

We have had a number of threads regarding this swag (I'm surprised you find it difficult to search try "mitchell AND "oz trail" AND swag") and everyone who has reported on them has been positive.

I have had a Mitchell Swag for about 12 months, they are value for money but the centre poles break very easily.

Like most things you get what you pay for. I have a "Darche" which is 20+ years old and still going strong. The simpson desert gets Bl....dy cold at night and I was as "snug as a bug in a rug" and my old 60+ bones feel it.

Hi djm67

There seems to be some confusion over my Mr Swagman swags.

My own line of Mr Swagman swags (Original, Classic and Deluxe - all of which are available in single and double) are available exclusively through me. They are made in Australia with a 15oz ripstop, high quality, cotton canvas.

The Oztrail line of swags, on the other hand are not made by me. I am a reseller of these swags (exactly the same as many other outlets) which are made in China.

I choose these 'cheaper' swags to sell with my own, as they represent great value for money. They are cheaper to purchase. have a lighter duty polycotton canvas, along with other lighter duty and cheaper features when compared to my own Mr Swagman swags. But, from the many 'cheaper' O/S manufactured swags available, they are in my opinion one of the better ones. There are many other 'cheaper' brand swags on the market that I would never attempt to resell - they are litterally crap.

I have had a few emails asking the difference between "my" Mitchell swag and the Mitchell swag seen in another outlet. The answer is - they are the same item.

As for me coming up number 1 in a Google search for OzTrail Mitchell swag......ummmmmmmmmm, got no idea, I guess i have done a better job at my website than others????????

If there has been any confusion from my site about the Oztrail swags, I hope this has cleared it up, otherwise shoot me an email with whatever question you may have.

If anyone on this forum is interseted in a Mr swagman swag, I will happily provide any member FREE postage anywhere in Australia AND a 10% discount. Have a look at my website www.MrSwagman.com.au and make your choice.

Regards
Mark

Thanks for the reply Mark, and yes that does clear it up.

BUT.............your website pages for the economy range of swags begin with:

"Mr Swagman's OZtrail - Mitchell swag is an ideal budget swag with a host of special features to make your camping a pleasure.", and

"Mr Swagman's OZtrail - Cooper swag is an ideal budget swag."

The use of the apostophe prior to the Oztrail name denotes ownership and gives the impression (at least to me) that these items are produced by you. My own personal thought is that the wording is a bit misleading, but I have no doubt that it isn't intentional now that you have explained the situation.

yep, I can see where you are coming from and i'll attempt to get my web site people to fix it.

If you look on my Q&A page you'll see the following....

Are Mr Swagman's premium swags made in Australia?

Yes, Mr Swagman's premium range of swags are made in Australia using only the highest quality materials.

Are Mr Swagman's economy swags made in Australia?

Mr Swagman's OZtrail swags are not made in Australia or by Mr Swagman. Many of his customers have been enquiring after an economical alternative to his premium range, so he now offers this service............................

I guess not everyone looks at the Q&A page and obviously i didn't word the page you are looking at clearly enough.

Will look into it.

regards
Mark
