Morning all.

Leaving for Simpson trip in a week. As part of the trip, we are intending to travel from Birdsville to Innamincka and past Moomba during the trip.

I worked on construction of Moomba gas plant in early 80’s. Was hoping to get close enough to see bits I worked on.

Also, I had the opportunity back then to drive out to gas wells around the Moomba plant and really enjoyed that, and would like to do a bit that again. My maps show access to wells is restricted.

Can anyone tell me the degree to which you are restricted in the area at the present time? Is there any sense in contacting Santos etc?

Thanks. JD

Lucky bugger eh ....off to the SD ,you'll find times have changed since the 80s and 90s about mine sites etc , when i was driving trucks I took many loads of Pre-fab steel to Osborne Mine NW Qld and on one trip wanted to go up the conveyor ramp to the top of a large silo for photo's, the Evans Deakon Forman said yeh just put your hard hat on , got some good photo's , now it's all gone over the top with safety BS because a few couldn't accept responsability for their own stupidity and had to as always these days blame someone else, so as for getting into Moomba i reackon you'll be pushin', but yeh, have a good one ,

Thanks Doug, looking forward to trip no end. I know what you mean about OHS - we toured underground at the Poatina power station in Tassie in the 80's and now you can't. JD

Last time (a couple of years ago ) we went past the Moomba gas plant there was a big sign out the front saying no entry to unauthorized personel, so unless you have arranged something prior to getting there I would say you are going to be out of luck.

There is a great lookout on a rise a couple of hundred metres from the plant which gives a good view of the place, would be spectacular at night.

Travelling to Birdsville on the Walkers Crossing Track from Moomba you cross access roads going to wells, most have signs forbidding access but I suppose you could get lost (not that hard to do near Moomba) and end up at one of the wells.

The roads to the wells are like a highway in comparison to WCT and are a temptation.

Not sure if Walkers Crossing Track is open at the moment due to the Coopers Creek flowing so you will have to find that out before leaving Birdsville

You've got to be starved or de-hydrated to get in the gate without prior arrangement - as demostrated by the employee of some silly contractor (to Santos)about a week ago. They did let the poor guy in eventually, but 2 security guards followed him everywhere he went. Not sure if they even let him into the dining room...

The wellsites aren't fenced off, only restricted by lots of legal red tape.

hi JD, don't know if this is any help to you but thought you might like to hear that we travelled from Camerons Corner and turned onto the Old Strzelecki Track Track ( not the one which now travel through Moomba), and as we drove up there we were amazes by the proximity of the oil wells to the Track, with no restriction, we walked right up to them to look at their powerful pumps! They were at the southern end of the Track. We continued without restriction, to Innaminka. This was in July 2005. Hope this helps you. Beautiful country to be in. all the best, enjoy! Henners!
