Hi
Could anyone give advice on the following. I have a new Dometic RM 2553 Fridge in the van which operates
well on AC and battery. This is the first time I have run it on GAS and although it is cooling
well the rear element and flue is very very hot to the point that a plastic "smoldering smell" is quite evident and the external plastic ventcover near the flue outlet is slighty scorched. It has been running about 4 hours. Is normal to run hotter on gas. also the smell may go after extended running on gas.
Thank you
Norm

Mine has never got that hot that it scorched the plastic. Sounds like a fire risk?
Try turning the thermostat down a bit.

Hi Norm,
I have a similar fridge and have just had it running on gas for the last four hours, while the flu outlet is warm, I can still put my hand on it and leave it there. No doubt you have a problem, have you a gas man that can have a look at it for you?, for sure I would not keep it running (might burn the whole van). Hope you solve the problem and post the results.
Cheers, Nev.

It appears to have cooled down a bit. The gas flue is still real hot and can place a finger on it ,just without burning the finger.
The pipe that runs across the top of the fridge ( inside the the top vent cover) is hot to the point that a hand can not be held on it.
How hot is that pipe on your van? I can not recall how hot it is when I have had it on electric. We live in country SA and where we are there are no servces of this nature. We are heading of up the centre and down the west coast tomorrow, for several months. We will be staying in
Port Augusta a couple of nights. We will see how it goes by then.
regards
Norm

What make of van?. Brotherinlaw has new jayco expanda van and on first trip melted plastic vent cover (not sure if on gas or electric) turned out to be vent pipe was cut to short and not fully sitting into flue pipe. replaced pipe under warranty and no more trouble.
Cheers

mine is a RM-4401 damm usless thinkin of goin 12volt as these fridges are not rated to work in the hotter zones like QLD they should not be allowed to sell them in Australia hope you get better results than I have and I live in NSW

Hi again Norm,
Yes the top pipe, the thick one gets quite hot on
mine too. I have installed an exhaust on the top vent and the fridge seems to work O.K. but we have not had any really hot weather since the installation. We are heading for Daley River at the end of the month so will see how we go there, have a back up Engle, must have cold beer.
Cheers and enjoy your trip, Nev.

I have the same fridge. It works a treat. No hot, melting plasitc. I find it is most efficient on gas and 240 not 12 volt. so when we are on gas and 240 we run it set on 3 and on 12 volt on 4. We have been trrough some really hot areas 35 degrees and some really cold 0-5 degrees over the last 3 months.
The secret to the efficiency of all these type of fridges is the ventilation to remove the generated heat.

try the Caravan
forum there is a lot of information there on 3 way fridges.
A post there about a new entrant with 3 way fridges that are not going to perform in hot weather so be warned if buying a caravan or m/home you dont get a bad fridge. There are tropical rated fridges and getting one in the new van del 2 wks.
