Dea All,
My 79 series TLC ute has leaf springs on the rear and they spend most of the time squeaking. Can I do something about this most unfortunate noise?
Chris

Just give em a squirt of Innox or lanotech, I have done this a couple of times now for mates and the result is them asking what I used (8 to 12 months later usually after washing their truck down with CT-18 or de-greaser) as the squeek had re-emerged.

Thanks Joe, I have tried fish oil but aftter 100km of dirt the squeaks return, I will try the Innox and lanotech. The ute sounds like a removalist van with the sqeaks....

Are they factory or aftermarket leaf springs and bushes??
Sounds like you may have polyurethane bushes without greasable shackles.

Hi Chris,
The factory spring bushes are rubber with a metal sleeve; the rear shackle upper bush is rubber only.
I'd jack up the rear chassis, leaving the
wheels on, undo the rear shackles, slip some black moly grease inside the sleeve on the spring and some rubber grease inside the rubber chassis bush, and see if the noise goes.

Hi Chris,
I noticed above that you sprayed
the springs with fishoil. Fishoil is not a lubricant - it's used for rustproofing steel, as it penetrates, dries hard, and is sticky.
I suggested doing the rear shackles first because they are the most likely cause and are relatively easy to do. If you need to lube the front shackle bolt, they are easily removed but can be hard to get back in because the propellor shaft pushes the axle housing back a little and the bolt holes no longer line up - I use a puller on the rear axle housing to pull it forward if I have this problem. I'll assume that you've checked the tightness of the U-bolts.
The leafs themselves normally wouldn't squeak, but your lanotec would sort this out. Best way to get leaf springs working again is to remove them, undo the centre bolt and disassemble the pack, clean them all, smear grease over each leaf, reassemble and put back in. Not too many people do this - it takes a bit of time, but the ride improves a bit.
