Geocaching - the sport of using billions of dollars of American military hardware to find a Tupperware container hidden in the bush.
A geocache is a container containing a log book and depending on size a collection of cheap "swaps."
The challenge is to locate the container with your GPSr, record your visit in the cache log, swap something in and out and then record your visit on line at the geocaching web site. The site has help pages for newcomers to the sport.
There are over caches 3,000 in SA alone with more being placed all the time. I would not be surprised if you could find at least one within 500m of your driveway - there are 15 within 2 km of mine. I have sent you an email with a file and some instructions to display the caches near you.
It is an interesting pass time and it has taken us to
places we would never have found otherwise. A lot of caches are placed on a point that the owner has found interesting for various reasons.
We have only visited 247 over NSW, VIC, TAS, NT and SA but there are Australian geocachers who have visited over 4,000. We have only gone on one dedicated geocaching trip - last weekend. Usually we just stop and visit a few if we are passing them close by.
Looking at your rig profile you have everything you need to get going. A laptop/PDA with OziExplorer makes it easy. A handheld GPS makes finding the final location easier.
Hope this helps.
Cheers
Pete
