Hi All,

I'm thinking of going camping in the Latrobe State Forest this weekend at the Hawthorn Creek Camping Area. Any one been there recently? Is there water in the Latrobe River?

Thanks

Ten+ years ago I would also camp in that area. These days wild horses wouldn't drag me there. Too many yobs and weekend warriors, for me, at least. Head another hour or two further east or north.

Mike & Phil,
Yobs..........They should be shot.
I took the family up to Jamieson over Easter (1st time away from home over Easter) and probably the last.
The camping spot was occupied by families however at about 5pm on Thursday 4 or 5 cars turned up with slabs everywhere and drunken fools. They made a racket all night, finally quietened down at about 1am only to start up again at 5am. Total disregard for others.
At 10am when they were all asleep I thought I'd get the chainsaw out and start cutting up a fallen tree into many small pieces close to thier spot.
After lunch, another 3 cars turned up to thier gathering. One being a Troop carrier towing a cage trailer full of redgum and slabs on top. We had lunch and thought it be best just to get out of there and did so. My 6 year old son was crying as to going home but a trip to Luna park and Mini golf the next day got him through.

I don not think we will go camping over a public holiday again.

Phil, best of luck for your camping trip. Jusr beware of the yobs.......

Rob:

I assume you're talking about the campsites along the Jamieson to Woods Point Road? Almost all of which are 2WD accessible. One of our first camping experiences in Victoria was in one of those sites about 12 years ago and at Easter funnily enough. The behaviour of some of the people was similar to that which you have described and I vowed I would never go back to those sites. Actually I have but only for a night or two and only out of season.

Since then all my camping has been rough bush camping in 4WD only places - other than a few motorbikes and one 4WD club with 12 vehicles who seemed to think my camp was a turning circle for them (what is it with clubs!?) I have never been disturbed since (one minor issue with three very rude fishermen on the Murray but they soon learned it's not wise to mess with people you don't know in the bush :).

Rude, ignorant, selfish pigs will always be so; the only thing to do is choose places they won't go to and if it requires just a little effort they generally won't want to do it.

Sorry your Easter was ruined. If you have a 4WD and no caravan drop me an e-mail and I'll give you a couple of spots if you promise to keep them quiet :)

Ha ha Mike, it's funny you mention 4WD Clubs, we have found a great camping site nicely tucked away, but over Easter a couple of vehicles found their way in, & left again, but I said to my wife on the way home, that next time I might take up a sign "**** 4WD CLUB" & put near the entrance, thought it might keep most people out!

There is water in the river. Note that the bridge has been out for some time and it is not fordable.
