Does anyone have any experience temporarily lowering the suspension on a 75 series troopy to fit on the Ghan railway cars which have a height limit of 2 metres but the vehicle is 2.1 metres high. Some ideas are to put smaller wheels and tyres on the rear, or somehow compressing the springs with a ratchet strap. letting the tyres down to 15psi only drops it 25 mm

Ring around the truck companies in Darwin, you might get it on as a back load.
It will be dearer but a lot less hassel.

Darwin to Port Augusta via Adelaide.
The only railways that will load/unload cars onto rail trucks at Port Augusta is Pichi Richi Railway which only runs between Quorn and Port Augusta.
GSR are not interested in loading/unloading at Port Augusta, so much so, you actually can't do it from their trains now anyway.

Cheers,
Dion.

yes I thought of that also but at $99 Darwin to Adelaide that price would be hard to beat

Used to just chain axles up on trucks. Might work.

Hi Graham,

I trust that you are aware that the $99 rate for your vehicle only applies when you are a passenger on the same train.

It might be possible to have your truck loaded onto a flat bed similar to those used on the freight services, they have semi's with containers chained onto them and they are well over 8 Ft high. Might be worth chasing up

Semi's with containers haven't been carted in thism manner for donkeys years. The only road vehicles currently transported on the CAR as freight are NTF (SHELL) tankers which are not chained down. They are loaded onto flat trucks which have shallow sides on them to contain the wheels of semi trailers, with the king pin on the skid plate held by a pneumatically raised turntable. Quick and easy.
The answer Disco Dave gave may have been applicable 25-30 years ago, but hasn't been practised since then.

Cheers,
Dion.

Also GSR psgr services don't run single level trucks, because they are uneconomical, if it don't fit on a bi-level car carrier truck, it won't go on a psgr service.

Dion.

Have tried cranking down the suspension but unable to get the roof height on the troopy below 2.0 metres so it looks like I will have to find a road haul company to take the troopy to Adelaide whilst we enjoy a couple of days in luxury on the Ghan.
Does anyone have a contact with a trucking company Darwin to Adelaide?
Graham
