I've been informed by my mechanic that my 1991 80 series requires new discs and pads on the front and shoes on the back. Things just aren't made to last anymore! I was wondering if anyone may have some experience with aftermarket rotors and pads or should I stick with original Toyota? DBA seem to get a mention so perhaps someone may have used these?
Thanks for the assistance, in anticipation. Happy to hear of any experiences of aftermarket brakes on other vehicles too.

Hi Michael

I had this problem a couple of years ago, all I can say is ring around, I had prices from $200 to $400 and all for the same thing. I don't think there is much difference in one brand over another. For one reason or another I have an original on one side and an after market on the other ( needed them in a hurry and that's all anybody had in stock ) and I keep an eye on them and so far no difference (100,000 Ks ).

Have fun

Craig

I used front DBA replacements about 3 years ago and am about to replace the rear rotors at 193000kms with DBA units. Yes, they are good.

I have used DBA on my VW Golf 2.8LVR6 and they were only $75 each for the front rotors against megabucks for the genuine article. So far they are superb and I will get a set for the rear soon.
Cheers, Graeme

Well thanks for that reassurance regarding aftermarket rotors. I have just contacted Toyota and the price of the genuine rotors is $192 EACH. Must be the gold they use. The DBA ones are looking good.

You have many brands to choose.
DBA
RDA
Prime
Protex
are just a few.
The RDA Prime and Protex all come from the same factory.
I use Mainly RDA and AC Delco in my workshop and have not had a single problem.
80 series fronts a relatively cheap to purchase but a bit more complex to replace. Anybody with a bit of knowledge will be able to do it. Prepare to wash, inspect and repack front wheel bearings whilst they are off. I also recommend to replace the inner axle seal with a genuine seal while its down that far.

hi michael, its not the gold but the diamond encrusted packaging toyota use. while its that far down i would replace the wheel bearings rather than repack them. i changed the cv s in my 80 about 3 months ago and repacked the bearings but had a humming vibration at about 90 to 100 kph. i changed the bearings and the problem was gone.

cheers geoff

Well I am impressed with that price from Toyota as it was only about five years ago they wanted over $400 each so all the competition has really driven the price down, so to speak.

Have fun

It's good to see that Toyota don't scrimp on the packaging Geoff and thanks 120Cruiser for the info re doing the work. I will certainly have a good look at the bearings and replace the seal. The way it's going I might even stick a diff lock in to the front while I've got it all out and have a look at the CV joints. There goes the next month of weekends.

If you really want to improve your brakes, go to the wreckers and get a set of 93 or later front callipers and backing plates, and buy a new set of 93 or later discs.....they are larger, thicker and u still run thesame size wheels. They bolt straight on, and use thesame pad. Huge improvement. there are other improvements tat can be made whilst there....a set of 100 series front pads fit in the calliper to improve the stopping power further...but with new discs, it is a tight fit...the rattle clips need to be left off.
Anyway, thats the best option, the second best is slotted DBA rotors, about $120 each from Repco

Hey Dozer that's very interesting. I will enquire re the availability of >93 calipers and backing plates. Is there any problem using slotted brake rotors given the possibility of the slots filling with mud? I would have thought that despite their probably superior braking, a smooth surface rotor may be superior in a 4WD.

Quite a few cruiser heads i know run them with no problems, maybe we r on the black top too much..lol...the drilled are out due to mud, i think the slots would self clean.
