Charging the second battery

I have a dual battery setup, isolated by a TJM management (150 A) system. While using the second battery to supply power to the fridge etc, is it OK to charge the second battery with either a battery charger (4A) or solar panel?

I was led to believe (cant remember where I got this info) that it was best to disconnect the battery to charge it. So I was wondering if there is any problem with the management system or alternator if you charge the battery with it connected up.

I have been charging my setup which sounds similar to yours without any hassles.

I always plug the charger in first then turn the power on. The charger is plugged into one of the outlets connected to the second battery. The fridge is always left on.

Thanks for the hint. Just changed the clamps on the charger to a spare 12V plug I had. Works a treat. Much easier than popping the hood.

As an aside - I note that the Piranha unit has provision for solar charging - it comes with a 2pin plug all setup
