Hi, Im going to finally give my 92 TI Patrol the flick and am thinking along the lines of a 06 D22 Navara, but these are like rockin horse s#*t at this period of time. Although I havent test driven or even looked at closely, the feed back Ive been given is that the 2007 D40 is lower and bottoms out, has a bad turning circle and the motor is smaller.
Any input appreciated

A mate of my friend had a D22 and then got a D40, orh mate the problems this guy had was unbelivable.....said he would not buy another one again.

The above is a reply you will proberly get, We have a new hilux and love it and there is no doubt that the D40 is as good and a bit better and bit worse in some places then the Hilux.

The suspension in all new 4x4's and future ones is always going to be more designed for the road then extreme off roading, very few people use there 4x4's to do extreme off roading so why would Toyota, Mitsubishi, Nissan and a few others build a vehicle that appeals to only a small market.

Spend $1500 to $2000 for a realy good suspension kit, get some good tyres and you have arealy good off and on road 4x4.

All long wheel base 4x4's have a large turning circle, with the Hilux we just park somewhere with abit more room....check the turning circle for a Holden VZ Commodore Wagon.

The power issue is a big concern, in all the mags that reviewed the D40 they praised the engine....how smooth....how powerful...how much like a petrol engine....etc. but after a while they started to say things like ....lacks low down torque.....you have to drive it harder.....you have to rev it more when towing...etc.

You have to remember it is only 2.5lts.

Only time will tell how good a new 4x4 is and choose what ever you feel comfortable with, every one has a differant story why the brought this on or didn't buy that one.

And as for the D22 or D40 go the D40 such a hugh improvment over the D22 but not on off road abilities but room, comfort and power.

Or buy a Triton or Hilux ...... or if your game and stupid one of those Indian built one or a Musso

Regards Richard

Sorry Guys I disagree with you !

I got an 03 Navara Twin Cab Ute, with the diesel motor, and at first I hated the thing, just like you lot.
I was not a believer of " turbo lag ", till I had the Navara.,,

I asked the local Nissan Agent to fix the problem, and promptly got a lecture on how to drive a Diesel. Now this angered me as I had driven Concrete Agitator's and tip trucks in the past.
I did not get too angry ( just swore a little ) but I did take it to another garage, that had a Dyno-tune, and guess what fixed,,and it still goes like a rocket ship ,,,, that was 3 years back, and before we went up the Desert this year, had it back on the Dyno, ( just in case thing ) and it had held its adjustment perfectly.
Did get the suspension fixed up this year after we came home, but I was prepared for that, as most vehicles I know of get sag, after 2 or 3 trips up in the desert, but I do agree that their suspension package should be seriously looked at.
Don't worry either , its not only nissan ones that play up , a mate's Toyota 3.0 Hilux ute sprinha fully "shyte" themselves, at 20 k and when he rang up Mr " Tojo " he got " duck-shoved " too

As for the turning circle, well thats only 10 minutes on your behalf and the problem is fixed, I did mine, and my 1989 Rodeo too, when I got it ,,

Cheers Mate

I just had our 2006 Nissan Navara ST-R diesel in for its first 10ks service.
and the Service Manager reported to me that while testing the Engine
Management System, it showed a slight reduction in power. they made
adjustments, and its performance has increased, significantly, the funny part
about this, I had not noticed any problems beforehand, it towed a 2500kg
caravan very easily, and very good in sand ect.

LOVE MY NAVARA

Cheers

Bucky,I have an 06 twin-cab Diesel, don't know much about the engine, got 40k on her to date, what does the Dyno tune do, my wife complained a bit about lag when doing hill starts, I am pleased to here that it performs well in the Desert etc, as for the suspension , do the leaf springs go saggy after a bit of outback travel ?
We are about to head to Birdsville and I wanted to drive out to the Big Red 37 Kl west of town , do you think its ok to drive up those big sand dunes, ? have BFG's AT
will leave the camper in town for that one.
The guys at Nissan say my engine is a ZD30 same as the Patrol's.
Some BAD publicity on this forum about 3L Diesel Nissan.I just hope our trip goes well, towing the camper trailer.

See Ya

Easy as Mike ,,,,,

I have done big red 2 times..and did the Simpson in '05
The first time, not long atfer rain, and it was easy,,
Next time was last August " big red " was dry as and nearly 43c in the claypan at the bottom, dropped my tyre pressure down to 15 psi, and straight up ,,first go..
Had I not been successfull I was orepared to drop pressures down to 10-12 lbs.

Back to Dyno tune,,, I'm not sure what it does,,, all I know that it works brilliantly,,

Back to the springs,,, yes you may look at them after you come home ,,, mine were dead flat, basically on the bump stop, with the majic Japanese 1 tonne ( 500-600 kgs ) " not happy Jan "
but I like the vehicle so much since I had the Ride Pro springs put on I may not trade it in

Cheers
Bucky

I don't own one, but I do drive one for work. IMHO they are a horrible, horrible vehicle. And I drive a Land Rover!!!!!

Just for the record I have also driven 'Cruiser, Prados, Patrols, Pajeros, Rolluxes, Landys, Rodeos and Jackaroos over the same country and rate the Navara as the worst.

Within my mates, 3 have got D22's who all had landcruiser 60 series in last 2 years and one is very happy and 2nd is happy now that he has ditronic fitted and 3rd doesn't care much about power.

All have been good reliable vehicles so far with only real complaint being the 3lt 110kw engines lack of off idle torque.

Have an 07 twin cab Navara, done 7500 km....the jury is still out on fuel economy. We have a tandem Regent pop top caravan which is 18Ft in length. We recently went to Pambular from Gippsland ( it had done 2300Km when we started out) , fuel consumption down..... wait for it... 19.7 km/100ltr and back 17.2. We had the foot off all the way and 100km /hour was tops.

Traveling up and down to Melbourne on round trip of aprox 400km averages about 11.7 ltr /100km and that is sitting on 100km.

It is very smooth, rides like a sedan and is comfortable to drive.

The down side is, fuel consumption I suspect if you want to cruise at 110 km/hour, no room in back seat for adult passengers, a lot of blind spots, typical lousy Nissan standard lights.
We haven't had it off road yet so can't comment.

Trust this helps a little

Please, you cannot expect to get the same economy towing, as you get on normal cruising.
I have an 03 Navara 3.0TD ... and I get 10 km / lt standard,, when I tow, economy drops to around 7.5 km / lt....
last trip up in the desert, ,,,, distance 6500kms, fuel 1000 lts.
Big deal, thats hard going too, but we love it.

Towing is done in 4th, in undulating hills and 5th on the flat,,I pay particular attention to revs and the slightedt sign of laboring, in the engine, I slot it back a cog.
I cannot ask for any better than that
Love my Navara

Get it back to Nissan as there is something wrong. Mine has done 10.2 over 60,000 k's over all and that includes about 10,000 towing a 2500 kg van. I drive at 112 km/hr with or without the van and I am not known for my light right foot!!

Bucky, big difference between the Navara 3 litre '03 that you refer to with the ZD 30, 2953cc engine and the '07 Navara 2.5 litre model ST-X that I commented on.

Totally different animal

Amazing isn't it how many of the expert opinions on here don't seem to realise the difference between the D40 and the D22????
Does tend to make a lot of the opinions worthles when they can't even get the right model!!
