Depends what you see as the most important features. The diesel Prado would be the best "all round" touring 4x4 in that class particually with the 180 litre fuel tanks, excellent driver position, space & handling.

Hi Crackles I thought that towing would be an Important factor for when you are touring and I was told the Paj had more grunt than the rest so does anyone know any specks ??

Depending on exactly what year you are buying this 2nd hand 4by & from what I can gather there was no diesel Pathfinder to choose from at the time with the Paj having 121 kw / 373Nm @ 2000rpm & the Playdoe having 96 kw / 343 @ 2000rpm.
Both vehicles would tow a 1.5 tonne van reasonably
well although obviously in the hills or a drag race the Paj would pull away.
If straight out pulling power is what you desire then the petrol Prado at 179kw would blow the pants off both the Pathfinder at 125kw & the Pajero's 150kw but then you would definately need the 180 litre tanks then.
If you want more replies just fill in a few of the blanks........it looks like you're setting someone up ;-)
Cheers Craig..........

Hi Craig yes your right we are trying to get a mate into all this as he loves camping but now has a family and says he wants to buy a van he can tow with his V8 crummy door but has since changed his
views after a visit to
stockton beach and a few dirt trackes with us guys he wants reasonably good feul consumption , a powerfull enough tow 4b and something he can buy off the shelve goodies to go 4bing ( unlike another mates suggestion of a ford exploder) but he says that my 98 100 ser T/D or our other mates Patrol 4.2 T/D is a bit big for his missus and thats how this whole SHABANG started ...LOL :)

I wouldn't discount the Patrol particually the 4.2 TD as it is very similar in dimentions to a 120 series Prado in fact I think the Toyota would actually be longer. If the majority of driving is city based with offroad driving only a minor %, the car like features (handling/ride) of a Prado would certainly be the better option. If towing is the key concideration, ie he pulls the van regually over long distances then a Patrol would do the job better.
After driving a V8 dunnydoor the step back in power may be too much for him to bear. Better he just go out & get a new 70 series V8 diesel, probably one of the best towing units currently available.
Explorer..................lets not go there ;-)

Try doing a couple of searches on this site. First for Prado, then for Pajero, as there has been numerous discussions about the subject/s. Keep you searches to the last 12 months or so otherwise you will get 1000s of matches.

At the time (2 to 4 years ago) there was no diesel option & the petrol model was inferior. If the comparison was with the new current range then things are lot closer.

If he's thinking of dirt bikes then the hilux would be a better option, can tow with it, throw the bikes in the back, or just going for a quit weekend can throw on the canopy chuck in the tent and fridge fold up chair, leave the wife and kids at
home and have a relaxing quit weekend LOL only kidding on the last comment. There all good vehicles. Our friends tow a coromal full size van with the 90 series diesel prado still manage 10L per 100. I believe from what Ive read on here and been told the current shape prado with the D4D motor are a bit thirstier but you are talking a couple years old so wont be in the range your talking about. I think any of them would be a great vehicle and would cost less in fuel than dragging behind his commodore We had a VX commodore V6 and was great on the open road not towing 8.4L per 100, whack the ski boat on the back (approx 1400kg) and fuel would jump up to 13/14 per 100. The current shape prado with the 4Litre motor would be great but as said above would need the 180L tanks provided. My mate has the current shape and when we went away at
easter he used the same fuel as me but was not towing anything. I was towing the camper and still maganed 12.8L per 100 with 3.4V6 90series. Go the 4by he wont regret it but if towing 1500kg would definately be going the diesel if he can afford to. Regards Steve M

Forgot to mention path finders dont come in diesel and the 3.3V6 petrol they do come in you might as
well run a landcruiser 20/22 towing. Very thirsty motor.Only what I have read but maybe some one with one on here can either confirm or say thats bullsh#t.

I drive a 90 series diesel-I can't get 10 l/100km out of it and I don't tow anything! I used to get better economy when I first bought it but it suddenly went downhill for no reason - currently averaging 11.6 l/100km, 50/50 freeway/easy suburban (no stop start)...
Your friend must have a very light right foot to achieve 10 l/100 while towing a full size van...
Cheers and beers

Hi there Richie, I was talking to him last night just to confirm what I said, he did say that some times its 11 per 100 and has even nudged 12 but he said he thinks it depends on where he fills up at. Dont know why that would make a difference but he says it does. He said around town is pretty
well consistantly 9/10 per 100. Yeah he is pretty light with the right foot. But he does the speed limits doesnt sit back, When he tows the van but he says he only does 90/100 nothing more. Regards Steve M

Hi there Richie, just filled myn up after a week of running around town and was 16L per 100 which is about the same as last time. Thats why when I bought this one I couldnt justify the extra 10g it would have cost me (and borrow some money which I hate doing) to buy the same thing in diesel. If I was towing a full size van then that might be a different story. Regards Steve M

Mate's got an 03 petrol Pathy and we were discussing yesterday about fuel econ. With a full car (wife and 2
young kids) and a full box trailer. he gets 450kms per tank. I can only guess the tank is approx 70l, which I think is around 16l per 100

Hi there Jimbo,"Go the vals" gota love those hemi motors. I had three of them vc,vj, cm the last of them. First one was a 245, the second 265 the last cm regal was a 318. Gotto admit the 265 was the quickest out of the lot of them. Sooooo much low down grunt is unbelievable would eat most 4wd motors even in diesel form. My old man had a studebaker 2 door was a piece of sh#t but had a great motor. Regards Steve M

We have a DID pajero auto 2 years old and it is fantastic. It has a lot of grunt and comfort. The GLX is the base model however has all the options including auto, cruise abs etc etc. I dont think you can go past this motor. It is a good car and good off road too. Perhaps it has not go the dual tanks however it used so little fuel you may not need them!
It is worth a very close look. The price is reasonable and the relaiablity is also good.

You can obtain a 81L aux tank for the Pajero NM/NP (non exceed) models from LRA (
lilydale Vic) - which almost doubles your "useable" fuel capacity from 85L to 167L.
This is only a couple of litres less than the Prado's "useable" fuel capacity.

Have to recommend the D.I.D Pajero. Go for the 5 speed auto combined with the powerful but frugal Turbo Diesel its a real pleasure to tow with. Traction control will see the Paj go anywhere a Prado will, and as mentioned before the GLX gives you all the goodies you would want but at a much better price! Throw in a ten year warranty and a comfortable ride around town for the other 320 days of the year when not touring or off-roading its no wonder I bought one!! (so Im probably a little biased) Resale is very good so your mate might have to look around to get a cheaper used one. The Paj is a very capable vehicle that is underrated by many (but not by those who own/owned them)
Cheers and beers
Scott
