Hi Guy's,

I am leaving Townsville for Karratha this week for work and will probably end up with a stopover in Halls Creek. Where is a cheap place to stay for the night's camp? I was planning on sleeping alongside the road with my car and boat but I heard that the area between Kununnurra to Fitzroy Crossing is a little bit different to Queensland. I am towing a 5m boat with a GQ and would like my gear to be safe whilst I have a rest for a night.

Cheers

Rob,

The van park is OK. Can get a bit noisy on pension night, but if you can sleep through the noise, it dies down later on and is safe enough.

Matt.

absoultely agree. we had the misfortune to stay there last year and hit pension night. locals were well on the way at 4pm and even driving to the caravan park was a hassle. better to stay down the road a bit - as per below.

cheers

anywhere out of town is good. there is a good camp about 25ks out. it looks like crap at the turnoff, green cans etc. but go down 3/4 ks and there is a big plain, heaps of wood, and a billabong safe for swimming,no crocs, only freshies, but they wont bother you, as long as you dont bother them.

Try old Halls Creek. It is well out of town (towards Caroline Pool and China Wall) and while a bit basic is quite and you can get a meal if you want.

There is a good camp spot at Sawpit Gorge, out the Old Halls Creek road from Halls Creek. We've stayed there and at the caravan park a couple of times. It can get noisy but we had no problems.

Stay at the resort at Fitzroy Crossing, it's only a couple of hours down the road it's quite, has clean toilets and a great camp kitchen.

If you head out past Old Halls Creek towards Sawpit Gorge about halfway there's some tracks to the west (from memory). Follow one of these and you'll find one of many flat clearings; nice quiet spots to camp, but you'd have to give yourself time to investigate. There's an old gravel pit/clearing/lookout with a view over a dam to a gap in the ranges in the distance, the best campsite view we had over four weeks in the Kimberley, and only a few km from the main road. Only disadvantage is that if you're towing the tracks might seem a bit rough; oh and if you're not careful you might get lost... Casper

Yeah accomodation won't be a problem in Karratha, as I'll be living in a construction camp for a few weeks till I move into a house. I'm also towing a 5m fibreglass boat so I won't be venturing off the highway to far to camp

Cheers
