Does anyone know if I can replace the engine and gearbox on my BJ70 (which is a 3B, 4 Cyl Diesel) with a 1HZ engine and gearbox - will it fit? Thanks

Not only will it fit, but it will fly and be registerable, because toyota made a hzj70 in 1990 aswell as a pzj70. Ive been speaking to a guy who put a hdft from a 97 model 80 series with 5 speed in his bj70....now that needs wings...

Thanks Dozer - I am thinking that of all the parts, the tailshaft might be hard to locate. Any ideas?

It 'will' but you will need a few bits from the donor vehicle (a HZJ 75)
The biggest difference is the radiator and cowling, it will be much easier if you have a donor vehicle rather than just an engine and gearbox as there will be quite a few little things that you will need to change.
If you don't have a donor vehicle I'd try and get yours and a 75 side by side to compare before you start.

Thanks Peter 2 - I think that's very good advice as I could see exactly what goes where

Another idea is to fit a later model 4 cylinder Toyota turbo motor, they come in 14BT, 15BT and the motor in the current Coaster is a 4.2l turbo intercooled.

if yours is a 3b turbo, keep it they are great motors, spend the cash on a rebuild and get the cam ground, not too lumpy, open the ports, up the valve size, add a fuel compensator, get the turbo fins angle adjusted, and the fuel pump recalibrated to suit and she will go like bleep off a slingshot. people forget just because it is a diesel it cant be modified, it is still an internal combustion engine and any mods in a petrol engine can be done to a diesel. just dont give it too much fuel.

If his is a BJ70 they didn't have the turbo only NA, the turbo was only fitted to the BJ73 middies.

It shoudnt need any mods to the tailshaft as the gearboxes all sit in the same place.
The shorter 4 cyl has a longer shaft on the water pump to to reach the radiator.
I swapped the old 3F in my FJ73 for a 1HZ .The 1HZ radiatior was a straight bolt up as were the power steering lines.
I had to weld new mounts on and change nearly everything from R to L or L to R.
