Im sure there are thousands out there just waiting to tell me i am wrong, BUT, after reviewing the specifications on the toyota website i find the performance, ie power output and torque on the new V8 that everyone raves about to be very similar to that of the 4.2TD......so why all the hype??

so what you are saying Phil is that previous Toyota engines are unreliable and they have brought out a replacement engine that is now reliable?

the mighty 4.2 td? th e4.2 is a great engine, no question, the turbo version is also a great engine... but let down by nissans conservatism, the turbo is set as a slug, but believe me it can be a firebreather.

as well the 4.2TD in the F250 puts out more power and torque than the new V8

Maybe something less obvious. Perhaps a marketing ploy.
Generally found, in my life time, at least, that V8s and blokes go together like bread and butter.
Possibly the output figures are secondry to the fact that its a V8 !

Cheers......Lionel.

I think you will find that the reason that it has not much more power and torque than the old 4.2TD is that the drivetrain can't handle any more. The front diffs go pop very easily in reverse now!
I also gives Toyota plenty of marketing hype to be able to sell a newer model in 12, 24, 36 and 48 months time with more power and torque as a selling point as they (slowly) upgrade the drivetrain to handle the grunt.

detuned to get good fuel economy?

Give one to Denco for a week and if you couldnt get 250+kw at the wheels and major high hundreds of nM, I would be very suprised.

I reckon Truckster and Peter (above response) are on the money. It is just enough for Toyota to sell their share and also leaves room to improve when the market catches up. Plenty of aftermarket guys would be working on the plug-in kits right now.

No diesel Patrol has ever had these Toyota V8 specs without plenty of input from the aftermarket boys. 4.2turbo Patrol 116kw and 330nm (off memory so don't quote me) is nowhere near the 151kw and 430nm of Toyota.

Cheers, Trevor.

Hi Wayne

Yes I noticed that right off actually, but people seem so excited with Toyota producing a GQ copy with leaf springs , a narrow wheelbase and higher fuel
consumption than new Nissan 3lt.

However Toyota knows that its image that counts to many buyers.

The Nissan engine has always been significantly more powerful than Toyota's V8 for example with broader and flatter torque curve but its an in line 6 not a "V8"
and hence doesn't have the image. (Petrol engines 4.7 and 4800)

You blokes are just the funniest, if you could only sit back and look at what you've writen, lol.

At the end of the day it comes down to one thing, Toyota don't care what you guys think, cause if they did they wouldn't sell a rehashed euroupeon spec 4WD to the aussie market, they would have something new.

Just my unbiased view on the matter.

I'm with you Redback.

But,,,,,,,

The new Tojo V8 is just a V8 version of the 1HDT-FE 6 cylinder motor. Being a V8 the torque will come in earlier in the rev range, naturally. That in itself will make it more attractive to the Aussie market.

I used to love my 1HDT-Fe motor on bitumen but it was a PIA down at low RPM and in the bush I was up 'n down that gearbox like fiddler's elbow.

I was, however surprised at the power & torque figues and would have expected a bit more. I reckon the issue is as stated above, the Toyota trans wol't stand much more and they couldn't be bothered designing a new trans for it.

In the meantime, the Chev does it for me - with a GQ manual trans,,,,,,,,

Just by the by, I was talking at Brunswicks yesterday and they had one of thier first ever converted V8 diesels come back to 'em last week - it was in an F250 and it had done,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,wait for it,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,wait for it,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

800,000 kms!!!!!!!!

It's been round Australia about 6 times in God knows how many years and the owner just popped in to say hello to the lads at Brunswicks as he started another circularisation of "Oz"!!! It's all original as well !!

And ZD30 owners are thinking they've done well at 150,000 kms,,,,,,,,,,,
