Has anyone used the new "STREET TO STREET" software with their Magellan Explorist XL GPS ? It's priced around $350, but there are a few In Car Navigation systems around cheaper than that. Do I use a cheapie Navigation system with the voice promps and the touch screen, which adding the software to the XL won't do ?
and just use the XL for trips. Any first hand experience ?

Hi Macca,
I haven't used the Street to Street yet with my Explorist XL, (still learning) but I did use a Tomtom last weekend in a hire car while in
Sydney. I was extremely impressed with the unit and have to say that voice instructions are worth every cent! If the $350 units are as good as a Tomtom, then that's the way I would go and just keep the GPS for trips.
Tomtom retails for between $800-$1100.
Cheers
Brian

Hi Brian,
yeah that's kinda the way I'm thinking, I used a friends a couple of weekends ago, It was very easy too use, touch screen which meant not fiddling with those little buttons, and with voice commands you don't need to look at the unit as much.
Cheers...Macca

Macca_GU,
Mate, I went through this dilemma recently as I have an Explorist 600 and the what I went was I got a different voice prompt unit. So I have the 600 for bush work and I got a Navman F20 for city work though I have notice that many fire trails are within the Navman as
well....Works a treat and more than happy.....

Thanks Teabag ,
I am thinking more and more that is the way to go, just have both. The XL is an awesome tool combined with the Mapsend software for planning and travelling, it does so much more than just give directions. But in saying that the incar navigators are much more user friendly. Nice setup you have. bought my GU in December. looking at getting all the bits on it A.S.A.P. Seems we have the same UHF as
well....lol. I have the steel bar, winch, lightforce,
snorkel, roof rack. Looking at putting a 2" - 3" lift and a set of weekend 315/75R16 tyres on.
thanks again....Macca

No worries. Are you a member of the Patrol
Forum? Good bunch of blokes with heaps of good info on Patrols. I have a set of Lightforce XGT's going on in a couple of weeks and will put the Winch and Dual Wheel carrier on in the next few months, hopefully?......Then the truck will be pretty much sorted....Good luck with which ever way you go.......

Thanks Teabag,
have you driven with he XGT's before ? I have to say....I was a little disappointed, it's a shame you can't try a driving light before you buy. As a pencil beam they are bloody amazing, the amount of light they throw out is incredible for a halogen light. but IMHO as a general purpose off road light not as good as MOST others I have used. So I got a set of those blue covers, one a clear for the pencil beam, the other a semi diffused (Combo) type, it does give a spread, you can see a band of light as you rotate the cover, but it just seems to scatter light , like I say, not as good as other spread beam or driving beams I have used. I was given a set of Hella jumbos, similar to your......IPF's ??? had them on my GQ for 2 years, both a spread beam type.....I found them much better general purpose lights. The XGT's are awesome on the open highway. I was thinking I wished I had tried the CIBIE TURINI.....Don't know anyone that has used them though....they are pretty similar looking to the older 240 blitz, but available in like 4 different patterns. Or maybe the hella 4000. Anyway just my 2 bobs worth.
Cheers Macca

I have just bough a Magellan XL and have a similar question.
I already have a Hewlett Packard PDA mobile phone.
Would I be able to use the Magellan as the GPS reciever and run Tom Tom or similar downloadable sftware on my phone for turn by turn navigation?
Cheers, Jack
