Howdy all,

Considering getting either a Magellan 600 or XL (with Aus topo maps) but am undecided as I will use it for both vehicle and on foot and like the added features of the 600 (i.e. barometer, thermometer, altimeter, 3 axis compass and most importantly the Lithuim battery!). However the screen size on the 600 is a worry for driving purposes.

The XL is good in that regard but it is an inferior unit.

Has anyone used the 600 for driving?

Also how does the XL rate in terms of battery power, power management (i.e. how long will it last on batteries and does it automatically switch to the cars 12 volt power when detected)?

Is worthwhile connecting a laptop to it during trips?

Thanks in advance.

Mate,

I have the 600 and wish I bought the XL.....Only reason is due to the larger screen.....The larger screen is sooooo much easier to see on rough corrugated roads.....I leave mine attached to the charger in the vehicle so battery power hasn't been an issue....This also has the USB cord so plugs straight into the laptop if I so desire to run Oziexplorer......Works a treat....

Is the weather function accurate /worthwhile or just a gimmick?
Cheers.

The only part I have used is the fishing/hunting function which is accurate to the tides......Weather seems accurate though I don't really use it.....

Hi Dingo77

I have the magellan XL as far as I'm concerned I would not leave home without it. I'm currently running rechargable batteries & I've done a few trips on them with zipo problems the unit is that good I use it in my truck at work then in my 4x4 on weekends I have discover Aus & topo also Discover Aus street by street I tell you what mate I don't care if the unit does'nt tell me to turn left or turn right by voice the indication you get is good enough it beeps to get ready to turn you get a indication on the screen with a nice bright arrow that you can actually see in the daytime with my sunny's on I can actually tell you I have a navman in my truck during the early morning I can see the screen perfectley but during the day it is hopeless. The only problem I have with the XL is I would like to have both my Topo & street by street on the same sd card I did transfer this setup on the one card but this did not work. The other problem is the power lead you should have a seperate power lead but they have the USB lead on the same lead dangeling about when you use it in your car or 4x4. I hope this is some help to you.

Cheers Macca

Hi Dingo,
I have the 500, physically the same as the 600, and have no trouble seeing the screen and reading anything on it, day or night, in the car with the windscreen mounted bracket or on the bike with the handle bar bracket.
You will find the 600 has much better screen definition than the XL.

Cheers
