Warning for all travelling into WA - our customs are doing 20 week survey & will be checking for cane toads and all stuff not allowed (fruit & veges, soil, plants) over our borders. They may eventually have manned post as at SA/WA and WA/NT borders.Anything that keeps those toads out is OK by me! Heather

From ABC news:

Western Australia's quarantine service has set up a temporary third road inspection checkpoint to establish whether a permanent station is needed in central WA.

The WA Quarantine and Inspection Service arrived at Laverton in the northern goldfields last week to begin a 20-week survey of traffic using the Great Central Road, which runs through Alice Springs and into Queensland.

Currently WA's only permanent road inspection points are at Kununurra and Eucla, in the north and south of the state.

Senior Inspector Bruce Hastings says all traffic coming from outside WA will be searched.

He says the survey may lead to a permanent station being set up to protect the state from pests such as fire ants and cane toads.

"With the mining boom and the way it's going, we've got to be very careful that contaminated mining machinery's not entering in the state and going to remote site and contaminating those sites with weed seeds and harmful organisms," he said.

Looking for adventure.
In whatever comes our way.

Thanks for your input. We are planning a trip eventually arriving at Warakurna Roadhouse approx end May. From there we were planning on stocking up on some freshies and travelling up the Sandy Blight Track. Will the quarantine station be set up before or after the Sandy Blight turnoff. As we will be purchasing the goods in WA will they be ok? Many thanks for any info

Jan, think they will be around Laverton & only looking for vehicles from interstate. Keep your WA dockets of purchase then you won't be standing by the checkpoint peeling your last 2 spuds & onions which we had to do a couple of years ago. Went well with the last cryovac steaks on a campfire off the Nullabor. Don't forget the Art Gallery at Warakuna. Cheers Heather
