Hi Forum
I am trying to find out if the road between Camooweal and Lawn Hill is generally suitable for 2 wheel drive vehicles with caravans? If it is, should the route be via Gregory Downs or Riversleigh? The trip then goes to Normanton and Karumba.
I would appreciate any advice relevant to the trip.
Cheers
Peter

The road via Gregory is suitable with care for 2 WD's. Its around 100k into Lawn Hill from the t/o at Gregory Hotel.

Hi Peter
Should be fine, the mother in law drives her lancer along that road and has no troubles. Just take it easy and you should be fine maybe a little bumpy.

Peter, take the road 71km east of Camooweal, it runs due north and meets the Gregory Downs Camooweal road. It is bitumen for 51km to the junction but two years ago there were a few potholes but it will save you 91km of dirt from Camooweal.

I towed a 20' Jayco full van. It was quite rough and stony but I would do it again. If you are coming or going west it saves about 300km compared to via Cloncurry. I saw a 2WD towing that route.

If you are worried about damage or not confident on severe corrugations and rocks go via Cloncurry. If your no worried it is interesting country and the road sees a bit of traffic. My guess 10-20 vehicles per day.

Thanks everyone for the info. will check current road conditions at Camooweal before proceeding. Could save a lot of miles rather than going through Cloncurry

Lived in Mt Isa for 3 Years, and escorted loads in that country, if the van is an Off roader and not too long go direct , turn left a K out of Camooweal, if it's an ordinary Caravan travel 70klm East from the Shell and turn Left up Thorntonia Yelvertoft Rd , and thats sealed 56klm up to the T, turn right and then it will be dirt and stones, you then have 2 ways, 131 klm to and via Gregory Hotel, [ long way] I would not tow a van up the Riversleigh road , and when you get there you will be in a Meteor Impact site from 515 million years ago

NO NO NO
We travelled up that way last august in our Patrol towing a camper trailer and man was it bloody rough.
It cost me a set of front shockies and as a result my front tyres took a pounding.
As suggested take the the easy option via the blacktop to Gregory downs and you will avoid almost certain trouble. But definatlely do not miss spending at least 4 or 5 days at Lawn Hill (stay at Adels Grove)
