G'day,
I'm just wondering if anyone has some up to date info on the Great Top Road from
Normanton to
Darwin - via
Burketown,
Borroloola,
Roper Bar etc.
I am planning a leisurely trip along there this winter in a Subaru Forester.
Am I biting off more than the Subie can chew?
I've been on the eastern end in a large 4X4 some years ago and it did not seem overly rough.
Just wondering how a Forester would handle it - given its lesser ground clearance.
All info appreciated.
Thanks
Nick

Nick,
I am also interested in a report but I will be travelling in the opposite direction. I would like to have it confirmed that both Hell's
Gate and
Wollogorang have shut up
shop making it an approx 418 trip without fuel between
Borroloola and
Doomadgee. I will be ok with this and I will be in a 'Cruiser towing an offroad caravan. I and I am sure you will be interested in the likely depth of any water crossings though.
Cheers,
Bill

Thanks Bill,
Yeah, wading depth is certainly an issue that causes me more concern than when I owned larger 4X4s.
While it is a great little vehicle, the Subaru certainly has its drawbacks - that is one of them.
That is interesting news about the closed roadhouses.
Should require a bit mor thought in fuel planning.
regards
Nick
