Gday,

Its getting close now till we head off around Oz and we cant wait ! Unfortunately (poor us..) we wont be doing the Gibb River road until late in the season (probably mid August) so hopefully there will still be some water in the gorges for a dip to cool off.

Anyways my question is that after sailing around the Kimberleys on the Inlaws boat around the King George & Berkely Rivers for a couple of weeks, catching a few Barra, etc , etc (ill stop there !) we wont be able to do the Cape York trek to the tip before mid to late October. Will this be too late in the season ???

Its a hard life......

Hi Birdy

Wouldn't think it would be too much of a problem - although it varies year to year. Only difference would be roads may be worse, water over the crossings may be a puddle and the landscape will be browner. Really depends on the timing of monsoon.

Cheers

Yeah i agree.
It will be a very dry Cape York.
And warming up during the days with warmer nights....
Maybe even bordering on hot nights..

Sounds like it will be just like I thought it may be.....spewin. May have to go down the centre to kill some time via Uluru through SA, Vic, NSW then Queensland and take my time and try get to the Cape after the wet season.... Whens usually the earliest you can get up to the tip ?

Cheers

Normally late may is a good benchmark.....
I rekon this year could be a little earlier....
Watch how the rain falls at Lockhart River. I use that as a measuring stick because all the water goes East to West along The Cape...
If i see the rain falling about 1 - 5 mm a day as May begins then not long after you can travel up to The Cape....
Right now it seems pretty ok,,, Archer river may still be high but i am sure in about 3 weeks it would be good to go...

Hi Voxson

Thanks for this info. Are you saying that the moment is too early. RACQ site says most roads are currently open other than just short of Bamaga on Jardine.

Can the RACQ site not be relied upon for road conditions? When they give it a green light - is this not ok to pass - still 4wd but passable with reasonable (not superhuman) driving.

If we to stick to Developmental Road there and back and and basically go to top via the major stops (no side routes other than perhaps Weipa), do you think we will ok?

I appreciate it is up to me to assess (and will be watching this site and making a few phone calls to Musgrave etc as Rob from Cairns Off-road and Sam from Weipa Auto Electrics have suggested).

Just interested in thoughts. Basically, we are contemplating going beginning of next week if it is going to be feasible. We are towing a CT with dinghy - don't want to be doing anything stupid - but at the same time want to see it if we can.

Thanks for all the input.

Alan

Oh,, I didnt realise you are only going via Bamaga Road... Probably ok now,,, but keep an eye on that RACQ website for the yellows at least...
You just gotta make sure you can get across the archer river and then make sure the ferry is operating at the jardine..
There hasnt been mush rain up that way recently,,, so again i wouldnt be scared to have a look at the moment,,, if you can get past the archer river...

Having said that,,,,, even if you drop down to the OTL you may even find that you will be fine along there soon,,,,, the only real tricky creeks are cockatoo and bridge,,,, (nolans brook),,,
Cockatoo has a good flow to it and may be top of bonnet depth and it has holes right across the crossing,,, good one to have another person guiding you across,,, and Nolans Brook is just a deep slow flowing and soft bottomed 20metres to get across.....
You could even have a look at Cockatoo,, and also Gunshot and if you feel it is a no-go you will find a bypass between each one...
