Gday one nd all....we have just purchased a Jayco Finch outback which looks like a real beaut. Just wanted to pick someones brain who has one or a similar setup. On the door of the camper it has a warning not to operate the fridge when the top is down as it amy damage the tent......what the ? How do you keep stuff cold if you cant run the fridge? I understand why not on gas but surely 12 volt would be ok.
Does any one run thier fridge with the roof down while travelling?

Just becareful that the overhead lights are turned off. We have been doing this for many years but have been caught when turning the frig on 240 to cool down and havent checked that the lights are on. This only occured when we got the kids to put on and they didnt
check it as it was something I always knew to do but did not tell them. It is easy to push the 240 switch when camping on unpowered sites and not even realise that they have been put on.
We very nearly had a fire in the van. Had to put a patch over the hole in the roof, turn the matress over because of the burnt bit and replace the cotton lining over the matress.
When the lid is down the overhead lights rest on the bed.
Cheers

Hi Flight Sargent,
The warning is for 240v and gas operation which both generate a lot of heat. The beds cover the top fridge vents when the roof is down, stopping any flow through ventilation. We run ours on 12v all the time when travelling. The only limitation is that the fridge has too be cold before turning over to 12v as they are not very efficient once off gas or 240v.
Cheers,
John

Had a new 1980 finch and a new 1990 Swan - ran both on 12v when travelling for probably 40,000+ km in many palces icluding GRR. Didnt experience a problem except stuffed the fridge on the Finch in the back yard when the 12V cable (not properly supported shorted on the fridge coils, arced a small hole in the coils and let all the gas out. Cost $175 to fix in 1986, but would cost a lot more now, but was probably unlucky

Ive discussed this with a friend tonight,
he understands his Jayco finch Manual to mean only run the fridge on 12 volt when then roof is down.
i have conveniently lost my manual - which means i run my jayco fridge on 12 and 240 when its down.
good luck
