Do you get tax breaks for living in remote area's?. We will have a van for accom, what are the long term rates in the parks and the general cost of living.
Thanks to anyone who can help.

You can start by typing in 'Mining Jobs WA' or other variants into Google

and go from there

Lyndon,

How easy to get a job? Depends on yer background. If yer a "cake decorator by trade" that's done a 20 week mining course then you could have done yer dough (pardon the pun!). But if you have some type of mechanical, technical or practical backgorund and have some common sense about you, you get work, no probs.

Mining Companies advertise jobs for engineering and senior admin staff in "The West Australian" newspaper - most job ads are in Saturdays paper, but they also use job agencies a lot.

Try AP Recruitment in Perth, they're good people. I used 'em a lot when I was "hiring and firing" as a manager in Oil & Gas. There's a hundred others - Skilled Engineering, Integrated,,,,,,,heaps of 'em in Perth.

Accomodation? Make sure the van has air-con. It can get to 35C at MIDNIGHT up there, never mind during the day!! It can get to 55C in the paddock in summer.

There is a Zone Allowance tax break, but its not a lot.

Cost of living is high and food is about 10 to 20 percent dearer than in major cities - but it is better quality as it has to keep fresh for longer in hotter climates. Fuel can be up as high as $1.65 per litre for diesel. Van parks - Karratha is expensive and next to vacancies. Others, I dont know, but those in mining towns are a bit scruffy but adequate, Ring around the van parks - Pannawonica, Tom Price, Port Hedland, Mt Newman etc.

If you saw the way those pencil necks at the rtecruitment agencies Stood between you and decent employees. I think you and many other companys may have rethought hiring stratagys.
My girlfreind had no end of trouble with them despite being an experienced truck driver and Agi truck driver. When they found out she hadned been on site before they didnt want to know her.
She had more luck going directly to companys and talking to the hirers and firers

Davoe,

I did most of my own recruitment PERSONALLY. I only ever trusted one agency and that was AP Recruitement. They knew what I wanted and what I was looking for. The proprietor was a good mate of mine and he was an ex-tradesman himself. So there was no bureaucratic cretin that didn't know a screwdriver from wheelnut that got in the way.

But yer right, some of 'em use girls that only know computer database pattern matching and wouldn't have a clue about good value employees.

I've hired guys that were brilliant at what they did and yet wouldn't come within a bull's roar of passing that much vaunted but absolutely useless technique - " Targetted Selection".

At rates quoted, Davoe, it's hardly worth bothering. $50.00 per year for Kal ??

I've never read a Taxpack. I need an accountant to do mine as it's a bit too convoluted for me. Being just a poor pensioner I need every dollar I can get from The Taxman ;)

Karratha Caravan Park was around $30per night. Mainly permanents.

A mob of drunken shift workers let us get no sleep there with all the antics going on through the night.

Next time will I stay back at the beach 40km north of Karratha or disappear into the Burrup....lol

Willem,

,,,,,,,,,"disappear into the Burrup....lol",,,,,,,,,,,,

Hardly anywhere left on The Burrup to do that anymore Willem. It's all gas plants, ammonia plants, salt plants, heliports, houses and airport these days.

My advice would be leave the NW to FIFO it just to darn dear and hard to get accomadation.
My missus went to Kal instead - cost of living is comparable with Perth and weather is nowhere near as oppressive as the NW
She currently clears over 2 grand a week and pays $50 per week rent.
However now she has the experience I am putting her resume around site to get her back to Perth FIFO
Zone rebate depends on area
Kal around $50
NW around $300
and remote areas $1000

I believe employers in the Pilbara are at the point of flying production operators in and out from where they live.
You no longer have to fly in/out from Perth or even other major cities. Ive met someone who flys in/out from Mackay QLD. 2 weeks on 1 off.

go look at www.seek.com.au
