Does anybody know whether fitting 16 inch rims will physically create a problem for a 2006 Patrol factory fitted with 17 inch rims ? What is the reasoning behind moving from 16 to 17 inches, larger disk rotors, perhaps ??

Prado and Patrols are 2 different motor vehicles.

Hi Stevo

Just be aware that the front studs are necked down and the nut can almost run out of thread if fitting thinner plate steel rims.

Stevo there can be significant issues depending on what model you have, the front discs are biggest and this is where main issue occurs.

Issue falls into two catergories - first size - Patrols used to always take 15 in.

Beginning in 2002 with the 4800 bigger front dics were fitted and no 15 in rims could be used.

2nd is the aftermarket wheel offset - you need a 10mm offset to be sure even with 16in that they will fit - Trak 11's have this offset (I.E. tyres further apart by 20mm)

On my car I have 3 sets of 16in 10mm offset rims and they are ok , and one set of 5mm 16in offset rims which bind with the brake calipers , to solve this I use wheel spacers with these rims.

The key is size of your brakes and I do not know when/if diesels went to big discs but with petrols its been since 2002 so try a rim on front first to be sure

My goodness you're gettign tricky these days Robin since the last time I conversed with you over on Yahoo Patrol. So you are now running 16 wheels on your Patrol at the same time. Tha tmust upset all the weight reduction work you did over the last couple of years. Not to mention the handling with all that unsprung weight.

Stevo

I use 16x8 ROH TrackIIs on mine for offroad work with 285x75 MTRs fitted. No problems apart from having to remove the front mud flap.

And don't forget to use a torque wrench to check nuts on changing wheels!

Cheers

Sure is - but mine's a GUIV and it seems the mudflap is much thicker. Plan to make up some tailored ones.

I was under the impression (from reading the internet.. which must be true!) that the front disc calipers casting marks, and possible a fraction more, needed to be ground off for 16"s to fit. Maybe different wheels have different rim profiles and thus some fit (as above, assuming everyone is talking about Prado's and not Patrols) and some don't.

Stevo,
it would be a good idea to check your insurance because they may well have different load index and speed rating .check the tyre decal on the vehicle as well
cheers mechpete.

Stevo. We have a 06 GUIV ST-S. Nissan still do, or did, have the 16 inch rims as an option on their flyers. When we got ours it travelled all of 70 km before the alloy rims were taken off and Nissan 16 by 8 rims were put on with 265/75r16 tyres. The rims came off a 02 GUIII ute.
In over 8,500 km we have not had a problem and that includes being used offroad.
We have the same size rims on our camper, but only Sunraisa's, and they fit as well with no drama.
The original alloy's are boxed up in the shed, waiting for some one to offer a decent dollar for them. :):):)

Stevo unless it's changed very very recently you will find the only Patrol that has the bigger brakes is the 4.8 petrol although with 16's it doesn't matter at all anyway. Nissan did not change any of the mechanicals with the pretend "new body shape that is significantly revised from the GUIII".

I don't have any experience with aftermarket steel rims but as Robin said the standard offset is 10pos. I have been running 0 offset alloys for a number of years with 315/75 x 16's and have no clearance issues apart from a little rubbing up inside the inner rear arches but that is a result of the 4 inch lift not just the wheel/tyre combo.

I have even heard of one 4WD store in Toowoomba Qld running 15's on their 4.8 without problem but from my talks with them it was clear there were running a very negative offset so the issue was probably tyres sticking out of the guards.

You will find it near on impossible to find a 10pos aftermarket alloy wheel as all I have ever seen are 0 which is more common being particular 80/100 Series offset.

In Qld at least you can increase your track by 50mm so in theory you can go to a 15neg offset legally as long as the tyres don't protrude from the guards.

Also in Qld you can you can drop your speed rating as long as you are not caught exceeding the tyres speed rating but you cannot drop your load rating. Going from 17's to 16's I doubt this is a problem but it can be going from 16's to 15's as I believe this is the reason some of the tour operators run 16's as they are normally higher rated for the equivalent size.
