What do people do that have fitted aftermarket chips to there cars.... do you tell your insurance company or not.The reason for asking is if you tell the they may knock you back on insurance as you have modified the engine even though it makes the car safer to drive while towing?
look forward to your replies
regards ross

Most of the after-market chips are wired "in-line" and can simply be removed and the plugs put back in the original place. So if something does happen, unplug the chip and hide it or chuck it into the bush. Never, ever give an insurance company even a sniff of an opportunity to deny a claim.

Why not make a discreet enquiry with your Ins Co re the fitment of these devices. At least that way you will, depending on their response, be able to formulate a submission to them, if you still consider one necessary. As you are no doubt probably already aware, Ins Companies may reject any claim if they think that a vehicle has had any modifications that change the specifications sufficiently to have contributed to the cause of any collision or such event. Probably the only way around such changes too a vehicle would be to obtain an Engineer's report/certificate. That's the way it is.

Yep, Advised AAMI about the D'tronic and 3" mandrel bent exhaust and they have been endorsed onto the policy. They have restricted cover to Over 25 though.

Ross,

Firstly, you are obliged under the terms of your policy to declare all performance related modifications. However, the likelihood of an insurer discovering the Dtronic after an accident would be remote. The likelihood of rejecting a claim based on the non disclosure would be even more unlikely, given that it really only improves the efficiency of the operation of the engine's own systems (as best I can gather). If I fit one I will certainly be telling my insurer and I will be offering them as much data as possible to explain what it does and why. I very much doubt that they will do any more than record it. Declaring it at least gives you peace of mind that you probably don't currently have in view of your post here. By the way insurance coys pay about 96% of all claims lodged including the ridiculous and obvious no goes. So as I say you would have to be stiff !

With RACQ after market chips are acceptable when fitted to a diesel vehicle that will be used for towing.

I insured with CGU and they accepted the DTronic and Mandrel exhaust as modifications. Also accepted them in the list of accessories covered in the policy.

Cheers. Mick

Hi Ross.
I have a dtronic fitted to my 2004 pajero. Rang NRMA this morning advising that I tow with the vehicle. Told NRMA there was a 15% increase in hp & torque.
After referral to the supervisor, NRMA agreed to the modification. I gather they are not too receptive if the vehicle is not used for towing.
Regards.
Vince
