Hi any one know of a good all terrain tyre for 265/60 r18. This is the tyre size being used for Pajeros (VRX and above).
The original tyre are
Dunlop Grandtreks which seem to have very mixed reviews with respect to offroad driving. I can't find any A/Ts any where.
Many thanks,
Richard

Good luck. A 60 series tyre will never be a good offroad tyre just because of it's design just as a 75 series tyre will never be a good road racing tyre. It just doesn't work!

Hi
I am new to this game and am interested in understanding why a 60 series tyre is no good offroad - I've tried to find out on internet but with no luck. A short explanation would be great when you have a moment.
Cheers

Unfortunately there is S.F.A. in 18" with any type of offroad tread. One of the most common options is to drop to a 16 or 17 inch for which there is a multitude of options.
I have heard that Goodyear is releasing an 18"MTR later in the year.

The Pajero seems to upgrade from a 17" to an 18" for the VRX and above models. One would expect that it would be possible to run 17" then - but would that be regarded as legal by the insurance companies:) There are features I want in the VRX, but not essential.
I am looking at a new car so may ask if I get 17" - I bet they will want to charge a fortion for it.
I have been waiting 4 years for them to sort out the tyre issue(with no legal A/T tyres) for my subaru so don't wan't to go through it again in car which is supposed to be a 4wd.
What this has sort have proved to me is that these companies are really concentrating on producing people movers or towing cars not 4wd.
Any way will
check my options.
Many thanks for the reply,
Richard

I just had a look at the Pajero specs and I'd be fairly certain that you could request 17" rims when you order the vehicle. The issue is whether or not the 17" rims will bolt onto the VRX.
Since the specs indicate the same brakes for both GLX & VRX, then I'd be highly confident that you could take the rims off a GLX and bolt them straight onto the VRX. The reason some vehicles have bigger diameter rims is so that can fit over the bigger brake rotors/calipers (whatever the correct terminology is); other times it is just for show.
In the case of the VRX, it appears to be for show; so the 17" rims should fit.
Of course, confirm this prior to purchasing. In this situation, you should have no trouble at all with the insurance company.

Peter,
Many thanks -
I have been hunting around and have found one Geolandar A/T-S which has 18". Not sure if in OZ yet and not sure how good. I had geolandars (diiferent type though) on my subaru and not impressed.
The 17 inch rim just gives me so many more options at this point in time. I don't know what benefit I would get out of 18" other they look big and impressive in the car park (which as you probably know is what it is about :) )
Many thanks - I will ask and make sure it is legal

The Geolanders on the forester were shiezer. They wore out and badly pitted after only 35,000km so I replaced them with bridgestone duelers that were standard fit on the older model, now hit 65,000 km and there is still 6mm of tread left.
The subaru dealer jumped up and down in his efforts to persuade me otherwise; me thinks that the extra $45 per tyre for the Geolanders was a big factor for him.
As they were sold and fitted by him (checked with Subaru HQ) the extended warranty I got when I bought it is still valid.
Haven't stopped laughing since.

Yep - agree about Subaru Geolanders.
I believe the Geolander AT 2 tyres were good for subaru but not legal.
My trouble here is that the Pajero tyre has an 18 inch rim which seems to only have road tyres. I am starting to thin the Pajero VRX and up are being pushed as town cars only.
On my subaru I went for legal coopers. Only had two punctures so far which was not expected as only had one with the Geolandars and they were not good.
Any way after going thru this tyre trauma with my subaru I don't think I will be buying another car where there is such a limitation on tyre options.

I have just purchased an NS Exceed which came with Dueler HT 840's. I am changing them to Wrangler Silent Armour's 265/60/r18 which I am told will be available later this month.

Hi I chased the insurance comapies and found they would be OK with 17" - as long as have same diameter as the 18" or within 15mm.
Also if you
check the
plaque on the door where it tells ya tyre details it mentions both
265/60 R18 and 265/65 R17.
I asked dealer if Ok to order a VRX or an X with 17" and he said yes (and of course they would not lie).
