Navara D40 Clutch Problem

Took for the D40 out yesterday for a bit of off roading. Ended up in some rough stuff, engaged 4 low and tried to reverse out. Clutch pedal all the way out( and I mean all the way out), engine powered up and the beast never budged an inch. I think the front left hand wheel may have been clear of the ground as well at the time? There was that acrid smell of burning clutch, so I stopped the process and tried to go foward. Eventually got out of the fix, but the clutch did not to handle the situation well at all. Only 12,000klm on the vehicle and only the second time I have used 4 low.

The conditions I was in, were not extreme at all, which concerns me. It took well over and hour before the smell of the burnt clutch disappered.

Any other D40 owners or Nissan mechanics out there, who have had or come across similiar problems, with their clutches in similiar circumstances?

No problems with ours (apart from dust sealing). Has done 9000ks. Diesel/manual and lots and lots of low range work. Don't know if the clutches differ between petrol and diesel. Is yours petrol?

Oh yeah forgot to say there is reported rear wheel bearing problems to you might want to keep an ear out for also.

Stu-k, what are the problems? as the link goes to an out of date forum.
The wheel bearing problems you are talking about was an assembly problem not a design fault which was rectifed by Nissan with a recall.

As promised i said i would post a follow up on the earlier nissan navara D40 posts .

The navara clutch went at only 6 months old and only covered 27,000 miles. I expected Nissan to cover the clutch under warranty as there has been a lot of clutch failures reported. But Nissan has been the worst motor dealership i have ever dealt with. Rude and arrogant from the beggining with a load of annoying comments being made which just makes a bad situation worse.

The wheel bearing thing I read was an assembley problem but even fixed ones were going again in the same amount of km`s.

Sorry guys I cut that forum post alittle short here is the rest of what nissan did........

Nissan have charged me £300 for a clutch £300 labour and are now charging " at least £700 " for a new fly wheel which they say i need as the clutch has worn so bad it has damaged it.

Maybe clutchs are just not up to the task these day as I read Hilux`s are having the same probs. Glad in a way that I brought auto now.

I thought with these vechiles that you had to push the gear stick down before selecting reverse or it would not engage. I believe this was done as the reverse is where some people unfamiliar with the vechile would believe first is.

Not knocking you Macca, but could you have forgot to do this?

You have a good point Benny, but you should have said 6th not first, in his haste he may have been selecting 6th instead of reverse which is easily done.
I think you will find reverse is lower than 1st so if it was slipping that much in reverese it would have had problems in 1st.
I have the same vehicle and have done a fair amount of beach driving with a camper attached, which has required reversing in soft sand in low range, also i have to select low to reverse up our driveway and have had no problems with the clutch slippage.

Macca...total shot in the dark and maybe wasting your time...but does your D40 have traction control?

I know its pretty hard to mistake that burning smell of a clutch but maybe the traction control trying to lock the spinning wheel gave off the burning smell?

Having had a few dramas keeping a clutch in my worked little worked intercooled 3.1l Isuzu....found that since they removed the asbestos from our clutches and brake lining they 'smell' very quickly but this isnt the 'end' of a clutch the way it used to be.

Previously if you smelt that smell she was toast but now with a bit of heat the resin in the linings does give off that smell but they do recover if you back off and let it cool.

Goodluck with it anyway...I can imagine (comparing to the GU) that this would not be an inexpensive clutch!

No mate it was clutch for sure. When I smelt it, I had a look see under the vehicle and you could see the smoke coming from the clutch area!

In regards to "traction control" Im sorry I dont know the answer to that? Maybe other readers could make comment on that?

Had similar problem. have done only a couple of hundred kilometres off road in sand and burnt clutch out at 22,000 kms. Nissan replaced under warranty.
Have had other minor problems, again, Nissan fixed all.

they 'suggested' that it was my driving. Have been driving for 30 years, 20 of which have been with 4x4's. Have taken hi-lux's to places that vehicles should not go and never burnt out a clutch. Have tried to get after market heavy duty clutch but none available( car to new ). Have also tried to get ceramic brakes to improve braking and stop annoying brake dust but also not available. Available in Europe for their market but in Aust yet.

I believe the desiel turbo has to much torque for the clutch. Amazing motor though.
