Hi all
We're new to this
forum, discovered it while planning our big 12 month trip around Oz, which was supposed to start today - however our Navara had other ideas...
Has anyone heard of the problem we're having? It has happened twice over the last couple of months (ie very intermittent) - the engine will start over-revving at idle (ca. 1500rpm), and then just completely die as we're driving along. It can be restarted immediately, but may cut out 4 or 5 times during a short journey.
The last time this happened, the problem disappeared after 2 days. This time we took it to Nissan, and naturally, it has stopped misbehaving. The boss has driven it
home in the hope it will cut out again, however they have found no problem so far.
The mechanics said they haven't heard of this problem before, we were hoping that someone out there may have?
Many thanks in advance.
Lee & Lea.

Lee&Lea.
The revs are controlled by a potentiometer connected to the throttle pedal, if that potentiometer was not earthed reliably it could produce those effects, just a possibility. Eric.

Thanks Eric
All suggestions gratefully received! We'll ask the mechanic about it tomorrow.
Cheers,
Lea.

Completely different vehicle but my wife's Jackeroo 3.5 Petrol had same probs that turned out to be mass air flow (MAF) sensor. Was expensive in our truck but problem is now gone. We had engine error code to go by which helped with diagnosis but it still left a few possibilities but trial and error sourced the prob to the MAF sensor.
Good luck with it.
Regards, Trevor.

I accidentally pressed the heat switch, I didnt know I did it, it revved every now then and started behaving differently. Turned the heat switch off and all ok

possibly the maf sensor, which is a common fault for 3.0 td's however not for your symptoms. the pedal sensor makes more sense to me but it should also create a fault code. nissan would have checked for this. it is a bit of a new 1 for me but it sounds electrical which should leave a code
where are you located.. many city dealers don't have a lot to do with patrols and haven't seen some problems before.
maybe worth a phone call to a rural dealer who sells and
services heaps of them
goo luck

I am pretty sure they are an electronic diesel. There should be some sort of DTC logged in the computer if a sensor is playing up.

Thanks everyone for your help, its given us some good leads (and more than Nissan could give us - nothing showed up). Turned out not to be the potentiometer, we got them to
check that.
Next time it happens (or if, touch wood), we have a place to start.
Thanks again.
Cheers,
Lee & Lea.

Don't take the vehicle to Nissan garages, they charge way too much.
And as my mechanic once told me, they send the Nissan Apprentices around to him,, when they cannot solve a problem..
That's just majic, isn't it ?
Take your vehicle to a reputible Dyno-tune place and they will fix it properly
Cheers
