Hi again all,
I am wanting to carry a tinnie on a 100 series, it has three Toyota single bar roof racks. thinking about a wind on boat loader. but where does everyone store the outboard motor and fuel tank? I don't want to stink up the interior of the car and have been told it is not wise to lay an outboard flat.
so far haven't bought the motor or the tinnie.
any thought would be welcomed!
Cheers

Doesn't hurt to lay an outboard motor flat, as long as the gearcase is not raised above the powerhead.
Also if it has a side gear lever, lay it on the opposite (tiller handle) side.

You could try a duel wheel carrier with a modified bracket to hole the outboard out side. but a $2.5k you may have a better option.

John, do you have a set of draws in the back of your vehicle?

Regards Brooksie.

We have the Auto Boat Loader, and carry the motor in the back. Not laying on its side but on its edge with choke etc down.

I put it on some foam and strapped it to the barrier. As for fumes, as long as you run the motor out of fuel all you get is a slight exhaust smell for a short time, then it's gone. It travelled this way for 4 months last year with no problems, kept the motor clean and safe.

I heard of tales of woe of motors being stollen from racks on the front of vans, and being covered in dust even with protective covers on.

Hi John, Considering doing the same thing myself, Have already sorted the loading of the tinny using unistrut and a unistrut roller bracket welded to the bow of my car topper.
My thoughts were to make a bracket that fits into your tow hitch when not towing I have a bolt on Hayman Reece single rear tyre carrier so a bracket slightly offset next to the spare with a removable brace linking the two is in the pipeline.
When towing camper I will make a bracket similar to the factory Trak Shak.
Please keep us posted on your storage of outboard.

Cheers Michael

G'day John
We are in the same situation, have just spent the 2.5k on the duel wheel carrier. Just have to make the bracket for the motor now. Not cheap but if you don't want the fuel smell + loosing all the room inside, it was the only option i could see.
Cheers Lyndon

Holy empty bank account Batman.......... 2.5k..., spose it doesn't hurt so bad if you say it fast.
I am thinking of maintaining the under car spare wheel and fitting a single wheel carrier to hold the motor. Spend the extra on a basket roof rack and store the boat fuel tank up there. if I need to carry an extra spare I can put it on the roof under the boat.
can I fit a basket to a toyota triple bar roof rack? seems a little high but I have nothing to compare it to. The Rhino boat laoder looks interesting.
So many options!
