Hi all, we are heading off from Sth East Melb for 10 days late May. Thinking of spending at least 4 days in Coorong. Any suggestions for camping sites? We have no boat, and prefer bush camping (less facilities the better). What's the weather, water and fishing like there that time of year? Never been there before, we've done Gippsland to death.
Thanks in advance.

We camped at a spot on the side of the Mitta Mitta River just north of Omeo which is not to far from there. Ferny Flat camping ground from memory. One of the best camp sites we have had.

Must say I was puzzled. Thought I would go home and study the map again just in case there was another place by the same name before I opened my mouth.

There are numbered campsites most the way along the beach when you get around Kingston to Salt Creek...High tide with a Strong Southerly can blow wash up and over the tracks at the dune base in certain parts...
But usually no big deal..
I have been there maybe 15 times and never caught a fish...
I have been to Coffin Bay once and caught heaps...
Browns beach and caught a few....

I dont think much of the Coorong for fishing..... Its a very right time/right place sorta area.... A very very right time place...
In my opinion..

Howdy....HowdyDoody

During Sep/Oct last year I took a group through this area. We toured the whole Coorong and found that Salt Creek was the best, most protected site. There are 3 or 4 camping areas (signposted) along the Loop Road - we camped at No 3 as this was good shade and really well protected from those infamous Coorong winds. The Salt Creek turnoff is about 50 m East of the Salt Creek Roadhouse (great food and very friendly people). Good beach fishing is available with access through 48 mile crossing or Ti-Tree Crossing. Check with the Roadhouse for fishing advise if you are that way inclined.
This site is also well positioned to venture to other parts of the Coorong such as Pelican Pt, Policeman's Pt etc.

Cheers
Pete

Thanks Patrol 22. Did you actually catch any fish or did you wish you had taken your gear with you?

Wishful thinking on my part but there were a number of people coming back from the ocean beaches with good catches. Don't bother trying to fish the Coorong...salt content is so high about the only thing that can live in it are krill-like creatures and closer to Murray Mouth the pros go after the famous Coorong Mullet - didn't catch any of these either but did eat a few at the roadhouse.

Take plenty of warm clothes, dont be scared of the wind,be careful camping on the beach, king tides and high winds can cause a bit of discomfort, otherwise enjoy your stay in SA.We still have some water in the Murray if get blown away down there

Thanks growler. I used to live in Adelaide, moved back to melb about 10 years ago after finishing school. Did a lot of camping and hiking further inland but never really saw much of the coast. Really looking forward to getting back and seeing the things I missed.

Not sure if you can camp at the 42 mile crossing, before you go over the sand hills track, toilets there.
Never seen a fish caught there either, but seen heaps of bait drowned!
A great spot is at the Narrung ferry, Take the road from Meningie to Tailem Bend, turn left to Narrung, 20 odd ks up, and cross the ferry, and as you leave the ferry on the other side, go about 100m, and there is a great grassed area with flush toilet right on the lakes edge, free.
You can also come around from Meningie, all bitumen through dairy country.
No facilities at all in Narrung.
A little jetty for you to fish off, may catch a carp or 3 if they are in the mood hahaha.
The "locals" say that the best fishing is on the other side on the rocks next to the ferry, dont know if its true, havent tried it. He was drunk at the time when he told us LOL.
We have camped there several times, good spot for the kids to play and swim.
Camping along Coorong and Narrung can be windy.

Cheers Pesty

We just spent 3 days camped at the northern end of the coorong at Mark Point. No fish but no other people either, a really nice spot but can cop some wind.
The only spot for the shore based fisherman in this area was Long Point which had a small jetty, a cruddy camping area though, would be ok for a caravan etc.
