The
Great Central Road running from
Laverton to Uluru, checking the distance from
Perth to 3 ways (NT) saves 1600kms (as opposed to doing the top coast road). I have heard conflicting opinions on the road conditions of this road. I'm thinking of travelling it with an 18' X-Trail Ascot Van (Semi Off road) and the tow vehicle being a Mitabitz Challenger, dual fuel (LPG & ULP). Anyone familiar with that road in recent journeys can give their opinion, would be obliged.

In your post at the bottom of the page there are HTML boxes. One with
Great Central Road and the other with Road Conditions. Click on them for more info. You may also do an Archive Search as there is plenty written on the GCR. Last post was about 10 days ago, I think

Kingeoerge, went through there twice in 3 years the last in August last year. On both occasions the road to the NT border was pretty good, from the border to the Olga's was heavily corrugated and areas of soft sand. A couple in a Patrol and a 16 foot ordinary caravan took 2 days to get from the
camp at Docker River to the Olgas.

I did it 2 weeks ago, there and back. Its in good condition in the centre of the road but the edges are sloping and slippery.
Corrugations were there but not noticeable.
The best part of the road was from
Laverton to
Warburton after that there are about 100 or so dips in the road and not all are
sign posted .
The dips are small dried creeks that run in the wet but are are fairly
well maintained with the odd one a little rough at the bottom.
I kept my speed down to suit conditions and if you do the same you will be fine.
My speedo says it was 2050 klms from
Perth to Uluru
Hint - buy a window squeegee and keep some spray on window cleaner handy.
My windscreen washers couldnt do the job especially with the ones that make the big yellow splatLOL

Thanks to everyone that has responded to my request on the
Great Central Road, it still leaves me a little uncertain. Have been told that the Commonwealth Govt. has allotted $10,000,000 to upgrade that road by 2009, maybe worth waiting, in the mean time I may do the "Coober Pedy" way.
Cheers

The road is magnificent. It is like a huge smooth dirt freeway. It gets a little rougher on the NT side but just slow to 70. it'll save you heaps of fuel and time.
