Had the chip fitted for about a week now and am very happy with it. Was just wondering what sort of km/h people are doing before going to fifth gear, because since fitting the chip I have found the car is so smooth through the gears and as a rule I dont usually go to fifth until about 85-90 km/h and wont if the engine is labouring. But what I have found now is at around 60-65 km/h the car is happy to sit I fifth gear with no labouring at all ( this is on relitivially flat ground ). Was just wondering what peoples thoughts are on this as you here a lot stories of people having gear box issues,But from what I gather most failures were from towing in fifth gear and labouring the engine.
Thanks
Ross

Having the chip means your motor is putting out more torque and power without you really trying, which is the equivelent of you using more throttle if you didn't have the chip, which in my mind means your doing more damage than without the chip if you drive in 5th at those low speeds.
I'd stay out of 5th if under 90!

Hi Muzzgit
Yes I am not a big fan of such low km/h for fifth gear but was just surprised how it would happily do 65km/h in fifth. My turbo comes in at 1000rpm now and the gearing in the navaras is not real flash as at 90km/h in
forth I am doing about 3000rpm and about 2400 at 100km/h. So what you are saying it is more of a torque issue rather than how
well or smooth the car runs.

Hi
Ross,
I have a Dtronic in my GU and i will typically slip into 5th at 60km/hr if on the flat. This means its around 1,500rpm and it does this comfortably. I am using hardly any throttle and am not straining the engine so see no problem doing this.
Cheers

I am thinking of putting on a Dtronic, but I would not need it because of towing; rather I would be more interested to know you noticed any reduction in fuel consumption and if how much reduction.
Thanks for your help,
Giggi

Hi Giggi,
I don't drive my vehicle for economy as I tend to use the extra power down low. But having said that, my fuel economy stayed the same or improved after fitting the Dtronic so i guess if you drove the same way as before then the economy would improve. I fitted the Dtronic at 5,000km and have now had it for nearly 90,000kms.
I doubt you could justify the cost of the dtronic on fuel savings. I reckon the BEST you you probably save would be say $10/tank and at ~$1300 you would need around 130 tanks or ~130,000 kms to break even.
To me, the real need for a Dtronic is to fix the low RPM lack of torque and it does that quite
well.
Cheers

can someone please explain this thing about going into 5 gear to soon, wh have a hilux d4d with a DP chip and with the extra torque it happy to pull 5 gear at 60 K up hills.
Years ago in trucks it was not good practice to let them torque up due to damage to tail shafts.
But all modern vehicles are more then capable.
Is it a case of he says she says!

The slower your engine is turning at any speed, the better your fuel economy will be.
I see no problem running in 5th at any speed, as long as the engine is not in obvious distress. If you introduce jerkiness you will cause strain on various driveline and engine parts.

5th gear , is generaly smaller, and also overdrive and basically cannot
take as much power as a direct drive 4th gear.
Hence anything you do to make it use more power shortens its life.
E.G. Big tyres ,towing, accelerate faster.
Rather than use and wear out one gear all the time - its good
to use other gears to give it a break if you can keep revs in a comfortable
and fuel efficent range.
Usually a non issue if taking things easy.
