I have a flexiglass textured canopy that needs painting and was wondering if any members have had any experiences (good or bad) in attempting to paint one of these? Any info or tips would be much appreciated.

I'd have a talk to a fibre glass boat builder or dealer. They use a special paint on fibreglass boats.

Years ago I painted my fibreglass motor bike fairing with ordinary car duco. 100% successful.

I repainted a fibreglass canopy approx 4 years ago. The paintwork is still in excellent condition. I removed all glass and obtained appropriate coloured auto paint x autobahn. They also supplied me with some type of primer...sorry cant recall name. I then gave canopy a good clean and as it was a smooth finish, a sand with fine sandpaper. I then applied primer and topcoat with a spraygun, reinstalled windows with new sealant obtained from windscreen replacement
shop. The paint has shown no signs of weather at all and is in the sun every day nearly all day. The hardest part was sealing the windows back in place as the sealant is a black gooey substance and a little difficult to deal with.

Its best to remove the canopy from the vehicle first.
Wash down canopy & let dry, then give it a good rub down with Scotchbright. Air blow off any dust. Mask up window frames edges first with a good quality tape, then cover up with paper&tape.Wipe over with a wax & grease remover, let dry then wipe over with a tack rag just before the first coat. Use a good quality 2 Pack paint - Durothane (or the cheaper Autothane) & follow the mixing ratios. No need for a primer. Personally I would color match the paint to the vehicle. Light first coat with a drying time of 3-5 min. Slightly heavier 2nd coat,(3-5). then lighter top coat. Leave for a couple hrs , unmask, then leave for a day or two to go off. Will last for years. Paint & materials for an av size canopy is about $200, depending on paint type, contacts & where you buy.

Hi Sarg,
I really appreciate the detailed advice on preparation and painting. I will definitely colour match the vehicle as suggested.
Thanks and regards,
Baz.
