Can anyone give me an update on the condition of the campground at
Glen Helen. I have heard varying reports on what it is like(for example - it is only set up for those staying in the accommodation and not much good for campers). We will be travelling there in a couple of months and would appreciate your comments (good or not so good).
Cheers

Last time we were there (2Yrs ago) it was pretty basic but it is worth it for
the Bluff & gorge when it is lit up at night.

I reckon its pretty ordinary and
bush camp in the vicinity.

It is a place
well worth visiting and the pub is good for a cold beer, but the
camping facilities are quite poor.
As already mentioned if you are
well setup, then just
bush camp in the general vicinity or do a day trip out of Alice.
Regards,
Matt

Interesting.
Sounds like the place hasn't changed in regard to the
camp site from a few years ago when we were there for one night.
Bit open and dusty at times, but you go there for
the gorge, and as a stop for travelling
the loop road.

You can
camp at Serpentine Chalet not far from
Glen Helen.
There are a number of secluded
camp spots.
Years ago Ansett Airlines(or was it TAA?) put up a few Chalets(demountables...lol) out there to attract tourists. Those are long gone now but the concrete slabs still remain.

Gday,
$35 a night for 5 people to throw swags on the Lawn next to the bleep house (local rates).
The
toilets hadnt been cleaned for months and were literaly covered in spider webs and spiders. Probably the worst condition
toilets and showers Ive seen since working on communitues!
There is light at the end of the tunnel though....If you drive a couple 100 metres past the turn off you will come to the
Finke river. turn up the track to the right before you cross the river and there is plenty of room to
camp. (no amenities but better than bad ones ). Still close enough to drive or walk up to the pub for tea if you want.
Cheers

Thanks folks the replies - we will give staying at the
camp ground a miss, but have a look at
the gorge.
We will certainly try the alternatives that you have noted.
Cheers
