I have recently had 4 new BFG A/T 265/70/16's fitted to my GU3 4.2tdi patrol and since then the patrol has been pulling to the left(enough to pull the car off the road or climb over any road camber) on any road surface. They have done only less than 500 kms , have been back to the dealer 3 times who has rotated them to every position on the vehicle. It has had 3 wheel alignments (each time well within specs) and has had the suspension checked independantly at the dealers request. The Patrol previously had Dunlop Grandtrek AT1's fitted and steered beautifully.Had a new steering damper fitted approx 1000km's prior to the new tyres but changed it back to the old one as a test but still pulls left .The pressures originally 38psi now 36psi ,still no change. The dealer has been very helpfull and is going to replace all 4 next week.Has anyone had simmilar problems or can any suggest any other solutions.

couple of points.
BFG's need to be run over 40psi.IMO I have 285/75R16 AT's and i run them at 45psi.
secondly is your steering dampner return to centre? if it is i will need adjust ing to pull the whell straight.
Do you have a lift? I have 3" and it will pull left, only a tad, but due to geometry change.
Also, take the front left off and swap with rear right....worked on mine.
Cheers

I have a Navara 2003 TD
My Cooper ATRs do that, but they do that evenly on both cambers of the road ( I think they call it " tramlining "....Local tyre bloke helped,,by adjusting the castor a little ,,and that can be done, but its an old trick..

Arn't BFG's a softer riding tyre ?? With that much air in them to get to run properly ,,I wonder ??

Thats just taken the wind out of my sales,, shyte,, I was thinking of heading over to BFG's when ( and If ) my Cooper ATR's wear out ,,Nearly 80k on them ,, and 2 desert trips in that.

Reason being, that I run 28-30 in the rear of my Navara and 32 in the front, rotate them every 5k religiouslyand I get the bejesus jarred out of us .,,,and thats with after market suspension ( better ) Mrs recons she needs to wear 2 sports bras ( hehehe)

What do you recon ??

Cheers Mate

hey Bucky,
When i bought my first set of BFG's 5 years ago, it was then that the dealer told me to run them around the 40 psi mark. There is also posts on here to say this also. its my understanding that they dont like to continually flex on the blacktop....wel i dont think any tire does, but running higher pressures certainly make a differnce to me. the max pressure is 65psi....so 40-45 certainly isnt a problem IMO
cheers

Thanks Wayne-o
Might run the Coopers up at those pressures, and see what happens to my neck, and those " fun bags " ..

Thanks for your ideas. The steering damper is not a RTC and other than the damper, the suspension is still stock standard. Each tyre has been rotated to every position on the Patrol with out any change.

Chooka,

Have a look at the wheel weights. Wheel balance should not affect steering, but sometimes it can. Don't ask me why, it just does. If one of the wheels has a large amount of weight on it, get the dealer to rotate the tyre on the rim 180 degrees and see if that helps.

Keep the shiny side up

Thanks for the reply. If that is the case you would expect that when that wheel is changed to the other side it should then pull the oppersite way( prior to the tyre being rotated on the rim) In any case I will disscuss your sugestion with the dealer. Thanks

Hows it going Chook ,

You have a problem that is built into Patrols ,

Even though you set it up to factory spec it still pulls left , I had the same problem . Unfortunately you cannot adjust the Camber on the vehicle as it comes from the factory.

I fixed everything by going to one of the places advertised as " shim-a-line" in 4WD mags , The place I went was a place that did truck wheel alignments , Although they were also into racing Patrols ! I got a camber correction installed and now the vehicle drives straight and wears tyres evenly.

Hope this helps you out , you could try searching this in the forum as it is a common problem.

Glenn.

Yeah, a mate of mine had exactly the same problem. The dealer replaced two of the tyres and that seem to rectify the problem.
I purchased 4 All terrain tyres not long after this, I had no balance problem but Goodrich never honoured the "Cash-Back" promises of $50.

Hi,

Can't offer any more advice on the problem but BFG's should be in the 40PSI range.

Hope you get the problem sorted.

I have a similar problem though not as bad as it sounds. The GU1 has always had a very slight pull to the left since fitting 285/75/R16 BFG's a few years ago; I havent worried about it too much as when I saw the ARB boys in Nundah about it I was told this was due to the 2" lift kit slightly affecting steering geometry. I decided to test this and put the stock suspension in when I got home after a big trip. Dissapeared, so I put the OME's back in and it returned. I had the steering wheel recentered by the local Bob Janes during a free alignment and it reduced it very significantly. Replacement steering dampner goes in next week so I'll report back if anything has changed.

I also run my tires at 42 psi all round normally and increase to 44 in the rear on a big highway run. At 36 psi fatso was a tad more comfortable around town but had that floaty feeling and soft steering feel so out came Mr Compressor.

The first time you come off the beach with 25psi and drive on some tar to the the servo (too slack to get out the compressor) you will be all over the road. Just take it slow for the few kms to the servo.

Had all 4 tyres replaced on Saturday morning and my patrol now steers straight again. The difference was even noticed driving out of the carpark.Steers straight and no more vibrations. Thanks for all of your suggestions.
