Decided to give the engine bay a good clean today. Used warm soapy water with the engine cold and then rinsed off with a moderate flow of clean water.
On completion noticed funny smell than smoke coming out of the alternator, alternator body was quite warm to touch. not a happy chappy at this stage.
I know I should have put a plastic bag over the alternator before washing it but have been doing this for 3o years and never had a problem before,
The alternator light is now on so I am up for a new alternator. I would be interested in other peoples thoughts on why it happened this time. The vehicle is a 4runner with a 22r motor
Cheers Pete

I would go out and buy a loto ticket.

It does not happen often but your number may be up.

I'd keep running the vehicle for a while - maybe it will dry out and the alt light will go out. Had this happen after water crossings in an old Corolla years ago.

Is it still charging (what is the voltage when the engine is running)?

Good news is new Alternators are relatively cheap for 22R:
$165 on Ebay

The light is on. I was geting it ready for sale with some regets as it has been the most reliable vehicle I have ever owned. This is its payback for abandonding her for a flashier newer model.lol

Hi Steve,
Finished up buying a 3.5 Jack SE with 101000ks. All log book services, air , bbar, tbar, 10 stacker, in very good condition.
Not entirely happy with the seats and suspension, but that will give me something to play with. I am trying to find out if the restrictors have already been taken out as it goes like the clappers. We have territorys at work and it would give them a run for their money.
Covered 400ks in 4 hours and used 53lts fuel which I think is not bad considering the performance on tap. It is a 5 speed manual and had also been rust proofed. What impressed with the motor is their is plenty of power from idle to 6000rpm.
On another subject drove a d4d dcab hilux yesterday in the rain, holy hell do they have some grunt kept getting wheelspin in 2nd gear on wet tar lol
Cheers Pete

check the brushes before you do anything else. They may just have decided to wear out same time you splashed the alternator. Stranger things have happened.
