Just wanting to know of any free camping spots just north of Mackay. Ourselves and another family will be travelling from Rocky to Townsville at the end of August-beginning of September and with 7 kids between us we thought we would do the trip in 2 short drives rather than one long and whinging one. Trying to watch the dollars also, we thought a nice 24 hr rest stop somewhere north of Mackay would be great! We both have camper trailers & are self-sefficient, but an area with a loo would be great, (especially as 6 of the kids are girls!)

Carmilla Beach is a great spot but is a tad short of Mackay. Used to be a free camp.

Cheers

Bowen is close enough to halfway, so to drive two smaller but even days try around here.
There is a "truck parking bay" about 4-5 kms south of Bowen's big mango. If you are nth bound, keep an eye out for this and then look for the next road to your right (east side of road), it will have a sign saying "land release" "waterfront land" for sale. If you turn right down toward the coast on this road (dirt almost instantly)and follow it to the end (about 2km) you will be at a T junction, turn right at this junction and follow that road to the end (about 1km) where there is a large sandy turning bay (no probs with trailers I take the caravan down there). You can camp here, it is on the bank of a river with good fishing and a nice outlook. It is not a huge area but you should nearly always have it to yourself (unless I am there hehehehe). Downside: No Loo for the girls but no-one to see you do one in the wild either LOL!!!

The big Mango in Bowen has toilets and an overnight rest stop on the side of the road. Also just sth of the mango (maybe 300-500mts) there is a small track leading to a small camp on the edge of the bay at which the big mango sits. This small camp is quite sandy and deceptive so take care with trailer if you go down there.

Otherwise 40km nth of Bowen another roadside stop is at Guthalungra, toilets and plenty of truck noise can be found here but the upside is there is a roadhouse with a liquor license to help you hear nothing after a dozen JD's and coke LOL!! Also cheap fuel here.

Next is Home Hill but before you get there check out this link HERE the "Funny Dunny" camp is close by with a toilet or you can camp at this exact location, either way a nice out of the way stop over.

The list could go on and on but there's a few for you to rumble over. Hope you have a great trip and you find a place or two to add to the list of must see's on this site.
Regards, Trevor.

We have stopped for the night at Brisk Bay just south of Bowen. There is an area as you approach the village of Brisk Bay where it is possible to head off towards the water along short 4WD tracks. There are no camping signs but friendly locals assured us that they were only put there by some locals and were not official signs. Plenty of evidence of others camping there, good sheltered spots but no facilities. Very scenic area.

That is why it is designated no camping - to give you truckies a fair go. There is a caravan park less than 2km north of there
