another way to go is a super charger which will give you far more advantages than a turbo at idle the S/C puts out what a turbo puts out at 1800 revs which will give you far more tourge for towing and beach work you can get a package which is a bolt on unit built into the inlet manifold will be a bit more expensive than the turbo but the benefits are far greater than a turbo i have one on my 4.2 GQ Col

I liked the extra grunt from fitting a denco turbo to our 2.8 3L hulix. It was great around town. Got a bit hot towing. I believe the 3litre hilux gets quite a bit hotter running a turbo than the 2.8D.

Or consider putting it on LPG injection with added benefits of extra range and cheaper to run as well as performance ....

IF you put one on, Make sure you fit a minimum of 2 1/2 inch exhaust system with a flow thru muffler.
And go water cooled.
Mine is a safari and has`nt heated up yet in a 2.8l loaded with camp gear, 30deg temps on the highway.

cheers

Hi there Scorp, I went through all this last year right here on this web site. Their was more against then doing it so took the advice and went against doing it. Now in saying that, my mate has one fitted to his 99 3L 5L motor. Goes like the clappers out runs a standard 1KZ (factory turbo). His is a mitsi turbo and only has standard exhaust hasnt been upgraded and still flies. At the moment with the way it goes he has no intentions of upgrading the exhaust. Now he doesnt tow with it and hasnt had it out on 35/40d day yet so might test it out. I spoke to numerous people with 2.8D hilux's and come to the conclusion that 90% of them said they wouldnt do it again. Too much money and does not add a cent more to the vehicle when selling if any thing can detract people from buying cause they think its been flogged to death. Now obviously you and myself no how sluggish a 2.8 or a 3L can be up hills and especially towing so we know why people add turbo's to them. If yours is a 5LE motor then if you decide to get a turbo you can do an upgrade on the computer which makes it work a lot better as the pump is controlled to pump in the correct amount of fuel depending on turbo boost so basically working like a factory setup. I had 280k on mine when I decided I had enough of being last on the cue and especially once we bought the camper. Uphill runs was painfull to say the least. We have upgraded to a prado petrol 3.4 what a difference but personally I dont think it will be as good off road as the old lux was with its solid front end but had to compromise with the wife as she was the one opening her wallet to give me the $$$ to buy it LOL. Go for it if its what you really want to do but I would advise to keep all your old exhaust, manifold etc every thing so in the event you ever want to sell it you can either pull it off and go back to normal and sell the turbo on ebay and recoup some of the costs or if your luck enough to sell and get the extra $$$ then good on you. I would imagine if thinking of adding a turbo you are not intending to sell it any time soon. Hope all works out for you. I was going to use Turbo Glide in Woollongong. Ring them up ask for John been doing it for 30 years knows his stuff and ask him everything you want, water cooled or not, turbo size, and ask him what he thinks of other brands and why. Ask away its your money and you want it right. Personally I wouldnt have gone water cooled if I was going to do it. Ask him why they dont use water and others do you will be surprised by his answer. Good luck Regards Steve M

Hey Scorp,
If you're chaising a good increase in power + save money running it then consider the diesel gas seriously. I know this is a blattent plug for our business but you could expect to get approx 25% - 40% extra HP out of it. We achieved an extra 41% out of a 3Ltr Turbo GU, 33% extra HP out of our own 2.2Ltr Non Turbo Mazda Van, 20's,30's,40's out of other vehicles. Costs $4850 inc gst with a $2000 rebate from the gov't. Doesn't get much better than that mate.
Regards
Dallas Green
