Hi
I am towing an 18foot van to Surfers and interested to go an alternative route rather than pounding up and down the highway as I have some time on my hands. I am looking to cutover from mid NSW say from Glen Innes to Grafton or Coffs. I am towing with a TD4 Discovery so lots of hill climbing my main concern.

I was looking at the Gwydir Highway to Grafton, as it goes through some nice National Parks to stop overnight. However I have heard the road has lots of climbs. The other road would be to Coff Harbour but I have done that before.

Has anyone got suggestions on both roads and attractions on these roads.

Cheers
Jason

Hi Jason.
Of the two routes, the Gwider highway is the bestas it cuts out the Pacific highway between Coffs & Grafton. Thereare good camping areas on top of the range & a great camp site on the Mann river at Cangai. This spot is approx 2km off the Gwider highway(dirt road access) & is suitable for caravans. There is also a caravan park at Jackadgery which is 44 km west of Grafton.
Enjoy your trip.

If you go from Glen Innes to Grafton there is no climbing as such, as you will be all down hill from the NP at top of the range (Washpool and Gibralter Range) although it is quite a steep descent. Excellent scenery.

As stated in previous reply, there is good camping sites in the NP and a good caravan park at Jackadgerry.

The other alternative is to go from Tenterfield to Drake/Tabulum/Casino/Lismore and then across to Byron Bay via Bangalow and up to QLD.

I would go the Glen Innes/Grafton route myself.

Good luck and enjoy it.
