Hi all was wondering if you people could help me out with a weight issue.Would 1.6mm gal at 2200x1400 weigh more than 12mm ply at the same length as i am considering making drawers and as i have to take them in and out was wondering which one would be lighter.
Regards Chef

Hi Chef
I assume you mean a rectangle/ cube? frame at 2200x1400 but are there any cross bars for support/strength and are you using 1.6 gauge gal angle or RHS and what size as in 25x25 or 20x20 at 1.6 I will assume it is RHS and I think they come in about a 6 .5 mtr length so add up all the measurements that you will need for your job then call your steel supplier and ask how much the material you are going to use weighs per mtr or length then you should come up with an idea on weight ,then compare the plys weight with the same method.
I hope this helps because I had an issue not unlike yours so GOOD LUCK :)
Regards J.B.

Hi J.B. no that is a overall size so the Sqm is 3.08m2 of 1.6 guage gal sheet or the same of ply , but the ringing of the steel supplier is a good idea.

Thanks to all that replied as someone suggested I rang the corresponding suppliers for the materials and the run down is this. For a 1200x2400 sheet of 12mm ply the weight is 19-22kg and a 1200x2400 sheet of 16# gal is 36kg .
So the out come is for the saving of 16kg a drawer I will be using the ply

The easiest way would to be get an off-cut of each cut them to the same size, grab the kitchen scales and weigh them. You should then have a starting point for some calculations...
