THE top two teams went head to head at the
same creek mouth for eight hours straight, catching 73 fish between them on the final day of the 2007 Barra Nationals on the
Daly River at the weekend.
But while cousins Jimmy and Peter Politis and Bert Woodward of team Polar Bears outfished rivals Diesel and Dust 49 fish to 24, it was not enough to win them the mantle of champion team.
Diesel and Dust, comprising Steve Taylor, Joe Lavery and Brian Lund, claimed that honour, taking out the Palmerston Game Fishing Club's 12th annual tournament title with an impressive 4094 points after five tough days of fishing.
Polar Bears, who worked the river tirelessly, finished second overall on 3869 while Cranky Crew, comprising husband and wife
John and Jennifer Mondora and Ian Leighton, fishing third on 2377.
Making up the top five were Reel Easy (Dave Keirs, Skevos Politis and Indrek Urvet) in fourth on 2149 and Team Daydreamers (Wayne, Adam and Scott Day) in fifth on 1581.
More than 1080 fish were caught overall during the five-day tournament, which started on Tuesday and ended yesterday.
One hundred and sixty five fishers in 55 teams fished in hot conditions in a bid to take out honours in what is known as one of the Territory's, if not Australia's, top barramundi fishing tournaments.
Only four of those fishers failed to catch a fish.
Champion angler overall went to Diesel and Dust's Steve Taylor, on 1778 points, followed by Polar Bears' duo Bert Woodward and Peter Politis on 1662 and 1637.
Bert Woodward also claimed the biggest fish of the competition - a 110cm beauty caught in the S-bends.
