Hi ya,
I have recently upgraded the suspension on my GU Series 3 Nissan Patrol (automatic transmission) with a 2" lift using Extra Heavy Duty King Springs and Koni Shocks. Since doing this the turning circle has increased considerably?? (So much so I now can't get around in a Court circle without riding the footpath. I have two friends with almost identical cars and setups (literally the only difference is that they have manual transmissions - the suspension and model cars is identical) and they haven't experienced anywhere near the same increase in turning circle. Tyres on all cars are the same. Any ideas on why this suspension mod has affected my vehicle so differently to the manual vehicles??

Although not a numpty I will profess that I am not totally familiar on the science of steering and associated geometry. Having looked at the stoppers they look simple enough - Is there any hidden considerations I should be aware of before I go adjusting the stoppers?

They are final protection only and normally shouldn't quite make contact.

I'd just jack up front end and turn steering wheel to ensure you can get full movement lock to lock without steering being articfically restricted by the stoppers or anything else.

If they hit just loosen lock nuts and back off.

the stock GU3's got a pretty Sh_t house circle, like a road train, aw you well know. I fitted similar suspension, 3"lift, king springs and tough puppy shoks, and the ajdusted the steering, so i took it back and told them to re-set to factory, the did, and now its sh_t house again, (standard) but not rediculus.

Bottom line, take it back man!

Normally a simple geometrical thing occurs when you lift a vehicle.... The turning circle should become better because in essence when you raise a vehicle by suspension you bring your front and rear wheels closer together which will make your wheelbase shorter and then make your steering and vehicle handling characteristics more nervous..
Got no idea why yours is more stable / bigger turning circle..

Hi Voxson, sorry to side track this thread, I am curious as to what rear bar it is you have and what size tyres and rims are they, also what suspension mods have you done?

Cheers,
Babs.

I fail to see how it makes your wheel base shorter. I might try a 2ft lift to see if that allows me to turn on a dime! :-)

Leroy,,,
I see you are making fun of my comment which is ok,,, lol....
Here goes,,,, both of the diffs have lower control arms which attach to towards the centre of the vehicle,,,, so if you did put a 2 foot lift in then your diffarms would virtually be pointing vertical with your diffs under them.... Should shorten your wheelbase by about 2½ feet.... So maybe you may not u-turn on a dime,,, but you could u-turn in a standard side street...
Why do you think people have to put caster correction kits into high lifted vehicles....
It turns the diff angle back towards normal because they start to point toward the sky,,,,, why??... because the diffs are getting forced towards the middle of the vehicle.....Which is shortening the wheelbase...Making the vehicle more jumpy over bumps etc etc...
These arms are extended also on huge lifts to allow the diffs to get back to where they started from...
Also,, the higher you lift the further back the diffs go and the more sideways they move meaning that adjustable panhard rods are needed...To bring you diffs back into the middle again..

babs,,,,,,
Opposite lock rear bar...
285x75x16inch tyres... Cooper Stt's...
16x8inch rock crawler steel rims....
5inch lift...
Ridepro 45mm gas shocks...
Custom made springs rated to 500kg... Rough ride..
35mm spacers front and rear...

Regards...

Thanks Voxson, I really admire what you have done to your rig I have the same GUIV 4.2 TD in the same colour, now I know what mine will look like with the O/L rear bar which I have been currently shopping.

One more question if I may? Does the heavier duty springs reduce your wheel travel off road?

Cheers,
Babs.

ah yes of course. I wouldn't of thought it would make that much difference to your turning circle though. I have seen those 3rds radius arms for the front but not really noticed longer diff arms for the rear.

G'day Peter, Hope all is well. The new Patrol looks great. Congrats on a beaut looking vehicle! I note you have the steelies on....once bitten twice shy I reckon ;-) Hope it serves you well for many years to come. Did Aaron do the exhaust? If so, what sort of clearance to the left rear shock is there? Any issues getting it past the Kaymar bar wing support?

Hi Kerry. All well, just recovering from another Europe trip. The new car has turned out great. Use the steels with the MTRs and keep the 17s for round town. Aaron did the exhaust and there is only about 3-4mm clearance at the left rear shock but then I've used the larger than normal Koni Raid shocks. Great ride! I don't expect any issues - after a big desert weekend there's no sign of contact. Very pleased with the exhaust upgrade.

THe OL rack is a loan one from OL Preston - mine should be here this week then it's all done and ready to head off to the Canning. It's been good to start from scratch and get all the gear. Should do us 10 years at least.

Cheers
