Hello,
We are heading to Fraser Island around October this year and I am interested to find out some more info about the camp grounds at Dundaburra. We will be in a small group of three families. I would like to know if the camp sites are open enough to allow us to put up our three tarps close together (eg: camp fire and kitchen in the middle), or are the camp sites the same as the ones at Central Station (Where you are allocated a car parking area and tent/ camping area designated by copper logs). If anyone has photos of the this camp site, we would much appreicate if they could post them on this site. Also, how far from the beach is the camp site and how sheltered is it?
Regards

We camped there about 2 months ago we had 3 cars a big tarp 4 tents all close together. The beach is about a 3 min walk away

Most camp sites close enough to join tarps.

Short walk (few hundred metres at most) down the track and over the dune onto the beach.

No camp fire except in the communal fire rings.

Fairly well protected by trees from the coastal winds.

You can only have camp fires in the communal rings at Dundubarra .. and if you can find three sites together you'll have no trouble linking up the three sites.

October depending on what time of the month can be busy and Dundaburra booked out so if you intend going make sure you book well in advance.

As mentioned you need to book online in advance for Dundaburra. We went in September school holidays and found the place pretty much booked out. The rangers actually told us which spot to take as they also had backpacker groups coming in that nite (and just about every nite) and wanted them to have the spaces on the edges where they wouldn't annoy other campers.

There is a chance you'll be struggling to get 3 spaces together during tailor season. Perhaps a few phonecalls a week or so beforehand might get the ranger to look after you though. You will have to ring multiple times though, it's not easy to catch the rangers in the office.

Cheers

I second that - Dundaburra is in the middle of backpackers run and gets busy with them living from shop-to-shop, i was only up a few weeks also.

I did two*week-long trips with 6 traversers to the top doing all of the difficult sections only getting lightly caught once in my L300 4x4 van ...

Most of the campspots on fraser are bacpacker & dingo-prone, can you make it to the fenced site at Waddy Point?... Even the unfenced one there is good and Marloo is perfect for your group if you are prepared to deter the dingoes

Other dingo strategy include
keep a light surronding the site at night.....
dont leave stuff lying around..
dont be friendly to them..

If you make the tides right and everything else is right and you go right there you can get from rainbow to sandy in under three hours - otherwise, plan a one-night at inskip or Govi or Wongai,,,is nice too.

Hi i always stay at Waddy point ,as the other guys say it is less prone to back packers ,not that their is any thing wrong with them!!!
You will understand better when you arrive and see first hand.
Waddy point top camp ground is good has hot showers for a $1 ,good drinking water etc. and not far from the Orchid beach shop whose prices are better than
Eurong.
I have photos of Waddy camp ground only 2 weeks old, if you look at my profile my email address is there and i will email them to you

Rob.
I only ever made one mistake
and that's when I thought I was wrong!
