I've had a macrac bike rack for years on Subarus but now own a Patrol.
Now with the spare on the rear door, I can't use the rack as it doesn't come out far enough.
Can you get an extended square tube that fits into the hitch to make it long enough to go past the spare?
Even if there was, would it be strong enough to carry 2 adult bikes without bending???

I'm assuming your rack fits to where the towball normally mounts to the ball mount.
If so yep, you can get a longer ball mount. Hayman Reese should be able to help you, failing that I got one through Lincorp (Jeep). The KJ Cherokee has the same issue and has a longer ball mount as standard fare, $74.
Cheers

I was in my local bike
shop in Rockingham the other day getting my biked fixed and whilst I was there I was looking at their bike racks as I have a similar problem.
They had:
1. One that was the whole unit, an extended bar to get it past the tyre, the upright as
well as the carry bar and it fitted into the Hayman Reece type hitch system, it was a good solid unit but cost over $200.
2. One that fitted onto the tyre itself, I am not sure of its price but it was around $150, but the one on display was for only two bikes, but I was told you can get it for four bikes, but no price was quoted.
Any decent bike
shop should have similar systems and be able to help you.
The other option is to go to somewhere like CAMEC and buy an extended hitch and fit your own rack. These are price between $80 - $100 from memory.

I got my reece style hitch carrier complete from Auto1 and it was on sale for about $70...was going to make one but decided that was cheaper than I could make and was very
well made!
It carrys about 3 bikes and clears the rear wheel carrier on MU, Jackaroo etc
Not what you want to hear but still very economical!
Matt.

Go to Ebay and buy a 2nd hand Thule (spare Me) bike rack - Thule bike racks are the best on the market by far. They fit 2 bikes - RRP new is about $160-200 or about half that on ebay. That way you can leave your rack on 100% of the time locked to the spare wheel and still use the tow hitch for campers, trailers etc. Check out the Thule website for more details.

I drilled aother hole in the towhitch to bring the carrier out a bit more to miss the spare tyre. There is not much weight so wouldn't be an issue!
