Ok, so it is very possible to do csr on petrol (re post 45011).....
so my next q is : how much of a pita is it to take the lpg
tank out and replace with auxillary
tank....and if so can you get different size tanks so the more fuel the better....?
what happens to all the lpg line gear etc and does it cost a fortune to do it - paying someone else or can ya do it yourself ?????

Hi
Laura,
If you've ever seen an LPG fire, you would know not to do such a task yourself.
An accredited fitter is required to install the system, and should be used to uninstall as
well.
If you decide to do this, an LPG installer has all the necessary
tools and expertise to re-arrange your petrol tanks as
well.
They will often have a pile of old petrol tanks out the back and you might get lucky and get one for your vehicle cheaply.

ARB and that cheap mob 4WD Systems who advertise in the 4x4 mags do LR tanks. 190 litres for 80 series from memory? Add that to the existing
tank and it makes for a long distance cruiser.
It'd be a grand or so but way cheaper than swapping vehicles.
All you need to lose is the LPG
tank and brackets, the gear remains onboard and can be reconnected later.

CSR on petrol.Hmmm!! Don't forget to pack the 5 litre hills pressure sprayer, and on certain parts of the track where spinifex can be thicker than other
places to check (using a leather glove) on top of the valley where the exhaust pipes come together onto the convertor. That is where the skinifex can build up and catch on fire. The last few seasons have seen a ford explorer and a prado go into meltdown due to spinifex fire. A fire extinguisher is next to useless one 60 second blast and it is empty. The hills garden sprayer you can refill as much as you like.
For the entire CSR and out to Calverton Ranges I used 240 litres ULP.
Halls Creek to
Wiluna. 3.4 litre petrol.
Have a good trip and enjoy the CSR in its glory. There has been quite good rains on parts of it so July/August should be really nice & green.

Halls Creek to
Wiluna = 2000 odd k's
240ltrs used. Yeah right !!!!
But good point about the spinifex. Also affects diesels, most likely the cause of the Prado burn up.

Hi Alan W you are right, I must have had a seniors moment.
Halls creek to Kunawaritjia was 182 litres (939Ks). K to
Wiluna via the Calverts was 240 litres ((1271Ks).
Sorry if I misled anyone, at least you made me go back to my trip notes for that info. The whole trip was 6213 Ks and I used 1003 litres of fuel.
Spinifex can affect diesels, which I now own one, but it is not as potential as petrol, but one still has to be mindful. I had the smell of smouldering spinifix on the whole trip and for months after I got back as it gets into the flanges around the exhaust pipes and the resin keeps giving off that smouldering smell.
That 5 litre sprayer was worth it's weight in gold. It was a life saver.
But the trip was fantastic, 22 days on the CSR
Cheers,
Nugget

This site is fantastic for information.
Thanks

Alan, when I get a bit of time I'll post a bit more info for you. To work out my fuel consumption for the CSR I did a run down to
Preston beach from
Perth drove most of
the beach and back along
the beach High and low 4wd some 60 ks and then back to
perth topped my
tank up, worked out my consumption and then added an extra 20% and it worked out
well. When we finished in
Wiluna I still had 35 litres to spare.
Cheers,
Nugget

Thanks mate, any and all info will be greatly appreciated.
A couple of fuel related questions though.
What was the price of fuel at
Kunawarritji and
Wiluna?, and when did you do the trip?. We are not bothering about a fuel drop at
well 23.
This will help with budgeting.
I e-mailed Gunbarrel Groceries at
Wiluna for their price of fuel, but they don't seem to want to talk back. When it comes closer to the departure date, I will ring the fuel stops and let them know of dates and quantities we need, and ask for up to date prices then.
Thanks
Alan

Talk it up guys I'm all ears. I and 3 other cars will be doing the Simpson then onto the Canning in August. Can't wait. Eager for all the info I can get. They say to take a piece of fencing wire to jag the spinifex out with too. Not to mention the bush mechanic essential uses.

i don't know how many people are in your vehicle but a thirsty disco, on the csr with us, removed the rear seats and put a sizeable portable metal fuel
tank on the floor.
small 12v pump did the transferring when neccessary.
this disco had lpg. used the lpg up first.
i did the canning in a patrol with only standard 120L (usable) tanks.
you have a 70 L petrol
tank.
took on 340L at
well 23. about 11 plastic jerries.
i have custom shelves inside for jerries but i empty these asap.
4 inside/7 on top.
people will crap on about weight and safety but when you have no option............
drive accordingly.
note- the 'empty' jerries i carried for
well 23 were filled with
drinking water and used/emptied en-route to
well 23.
ps are your shockies up to all this?
